am considering buying a 8070 fwa tractor with 4700 hrs. was told that Allis Chalmers had issued a service bulletin to dealers about changing out rod bearings and bolts at 3000 hrs. Does anyone have access to this bulletin?

Ok thanks. The same guy said he could change the pto speed to 540 and all I had to do is flip the pto shaft to go back to the 1000 rpm. Are there kits available to do this?

you can do this with parts from an 8030-8050 or 7000 series with dual pto. It's not a quick job and you would have to have a donor tractor to get the parts from.

If that 8070 fwa tractor has 5000 hrs on it AND it was pretty much only a heavy tillage tractor, it is probably in need of an overhaul. Most people don't realize that an FWA tractor engine gets the snot worked out of it compared to a 2 WD. Now, I have a friend who has an 8050 fwa with almost 7,000 hrs on it and never been touched. Why ?? it has only been a 12 row planter tractor and light tillage all its life. Nothing heavy. The moral of the story is this....an engine is designed to burn X gallons of fuel before it's time for an overhaul. So, with that in mind, do you burn all those gallons in 4000 hrs or 8000 hrs ???

With 4700 hers, I would pull the pan and replace the bearings if I was not going to overhaul it. Don't like to see windows in sides of blocks. MACK

Every 3000 hours, we would take our Allis tractors in, and replace the rod bearings. We would also check the main bearings, and if the engine had a dampener, that was replaced. While we were at it, we had the rear end cover pulled, and replace the pinion shaft. Once we started doing this, no more engine or rear end failures.

We use Archer oil 15/40 in ours. At 3000 had mains and rods replaced. Our man said that they still looked great. Now days all they do is plant and pull the roller.
If you are looking at a power shift, check to see if 6th gear low and 2nd gear high are the same speed. If they are, you will hear a high pitch wine in 5th gear. This is found in early tractors.

For instance, on an 8070, we would have the cover pulled on the top of the rear end. Remove the bolt, (70933256), the short, (70262061) and long, (70262061) pinion shafts. If the pinion shafts looked good, then we would have just the pinion shafts and the bolt replaced, if the pinion shafts had any wear, or scuffing, then we would have a gear kit installed, (70261967).

So, we are talking the DIFFERENTIAL spider pins ?? I have had one long bolt break in a black 7060 and the damage was catastrophic. Replaced with maroon chassis parts. I've been tempted to remove the cover and replace the long bolt and nut and tack weld in the short spider pins to keep something like that from ever happening again.

Yes sir, I'm talking about the differential spider pins. We had the bolt break on a 7060, was not pretty, this is why we would have them looked at every 3000 hours.

Did you remove/drain the oil out to do this? How many times did you find the spider gear/parts in need of replacement? Was this a heavy fieldwork tractor? Or would you do it on a haying - cutting, baling tractor too? I have four of the big engine Allis tractors, from 3-9000 hours, and have never checked a rear end...

I'm thinking drain rear end oil and remove the left hand hydraulic filter and its housing to gain access after removing the lift arm housing ???
