Before I paint I want to be a bit more pleased with my tie downs on my WC. Not sure I shouldn't go with I-bolts and place them behind the tires versus in front. What say yous guys?

We haul our car on my tractor hauling trailer. Because cars have springs I find it is much better to just lasso the wheels with tie down straps.
So now I do the same with my tractors.

On a tractor with good paint, I use these inexpensive straps from Harbor Freight.

If the trailer is short, I put one between the front wheels and chain towards the back. I put another around the drawbar and chain towards the front (all chains underneath the tractor).

On a longer trailer, I still put the strap between the front wheels, but I turn them to the front of the tractor (It works for towing, too.) and a clevis in the drawbar with it chained to the rear.

The straps are a lot more forgiving than chains!

I used a chain hook on the angle iron cross member for the front engine support. Just reach up under the back of the angle hook the hook over the top lip, slid it up to the frame rail, and then angle the chain forward and down to the trailer pocket with a binder on both side. If it did scratch the paint its up under the tractor where it is not seen. I was going to add something for tie down also but didnt like the idea of the extra appendage.
Regards,
Chris

With a hand crank it might be harder to do but I was thinking of putting a 2 inch receiver on the front of my farmall h when I restore it. The tricycle front end with a hitch is just soo handy for backing a trailer up. It would also double as a tie down point.

When I haul a tractor the order of importance for tie downs is A- Secure load, B-Passing inspection, C-Protect paint. Others differ.

Personally I am with Chris, extra tie down hooks etc are just a non OEM part that still has the paint knocked off of it from the chains. I am not sure that straps will cut the mustard with DOT? I have heard both ways. The hauler we use at my company says no way Jay! straps will not pass a DOT inspection.
We tie the back end of the WC down using the drawbar bale to cross chain. The front end we tie down by either hooking a chain under the frame rail as Chris described or we have looped a long chain behind the pedestal and over the tires with binders on both sides. Neither is technically legal but it is secure and looks legal for "drive by" DOT inspections.

The tied down should be 4 point and securing device strong enough in rating to hold the weight of the load .
Straps will work IF rated as tie-downs - look at the strap load binders on flatbeds where a end is secured into winch device on edge of flatbed .
HF straps (2") I used for securing pipe onto trailers or in dump box but not for hauling equipment . There DOT rated chain is used with proper chain binder .
Rather than the slip hooks shown in picture - use a grab hook to secure chain into it .
Lat week just down the road from here a guy lost the trailer off his 3/4 ton PU while hauling a larger skid steer , machine and trailer in ditch - machine still partially attached to trailer but both laying on side - well skid loader was fully horizontal to ground with chain hanging from it .

I know we are getting off the original subject of this thread, but the requirement of four point tie downs are for equipment weighing over 10,000 lbs. Loads under 10,000 lbs. require two tie downs.

Straps are acceptable tie downs, as long as they have a rating to meet the load.

Here is a very good link to the US Department of Transportation's Drivers Handbook for Cargo Securement.

Chapters 9 & 10 talk about securing equipment. Chapters 1 & 2 have great general information about securing cargo and acceptable tiedowns. Appendix A has info about Working Load Limits (WLLs) of different tiedowns.

It says 2 tie downs at front and rear. I take that to mean a total od 4 tie downs.
