They are gear jumpers for sure! I always thought they were the worse for jumping out of gear, especially the cost reduced tractors

They only jump out because they are ground them into gear. People problem not gear problem. MACK

Like Mac said its not the tractor it is the operators that wreck them. In the 190s and 200 they just gave you a longer shifter which gave the operator more leverage to grind the gears harder. We had a 200 on the farm that had 6500 hours on it and the transmission was good when we traded it in, on the other hand I had an uncle that couldn't make a trasmission in any tractor last over a year .

Occasionally, I'd shorten the shift lever 4 to 6 inches (on 190/200)and leave the knob off the shift lever. Customer couldn't grind gears as bad that way.

had a 200 with over 7000 hours on it (last 2000 had a loader) and never had one problem with gear jumping. As stated before, mostly operator damage.

I kno grinding hard on them but a guy i have worked for was test driving one on a dealers lot and it wouldnt stay in 3rd for nuthing!!

DougG, So was your guy that you worked for "test" driving a new 200 back in the 70's and he couldn't keep it in 3rd??????? or, was he test driving a abused 200 that the previous owners ground the crap out the transmission because he didn't understand the correct method of shifting a tractor?
It is a sad commentary when people label AC Tractors as "gear jumpers". As stated above, they only gear jump when they get/have been abused by owners.

No it was new, had only been off the truck ,even if it was operator error something shoulda been changed in engineering, no other company had gear jumpers did they?

I would lean towards the possibility the two 1/2" bolts/nuts on the shifter link were a bit on the tight side requiring the operator to move the shift lever with a little more effort to get it all the way into gear. Regardless, it was a warranty issue if there was anything wrong and it would have been repaired before delivery to the new owner.

My 200 has 12000 hrs on it .Been repainted once ,engine been freshened up once,pto clutch rebuilt once,power director done twice. Transmission aint never been touched and it dont jump out of gear either.Yes it really does have 12000 hrs on it.

My 200 has 10000+ hours motor rebuilt. @ 7700 hours trans all original im the second owner... great tractor

I have rebuilt many 180,190,200 trans over the years and most of the problem is not operator error with shifting. Improper lubrication from low oil levels are to blame, the problem is usualy the bearing in the input shaft that supports the main shaft, whics is the pinion shaft. The bearing fails and ruins the end of the shaft allowing it to move, which causes it to jump out of gear. I you check you will find that you seldom find one that jumps out of the lower gears because the higer gears are in the front odf the trans next to the imput shaft.
