There is supposed to be a support bushing bearing bolted inside of the left frame rail with 1 bolt just in front of the bell housing. This takes care of supporting the rear section of the shaft. This is likely worn and is letting the shaft rub the bell housing.

On the D-17 diesel that I am currently restoring, the shaft and support bearing block was worn. I cut the worn part of the shaft out, drilled, pinned , welded and turned the shaft new, then we made a new support block with a brass wear bushing. Also drilled and tapped the block for a grease zerk. She won't wear out again in my ownership life. Dave.
