every now and then my d15 series II gas engine will pop out of a forward gear.I think it is mostly second gear but am not sure as i have not used it a great deal. thankfully no snow yet but it will come. thanks

Thats a common issue for these collar shift trans. There are some"fixes" you can try like making sure fork isn't bent or maybe moving detent grove on shift rail . Likely a real fix will involve replacement of worn parts (complete disassembly) and a thick checkbook !!

ive seen a guy use a bungie cord to hold his tractor in gear.is this acceptable and when u say expensive to fix is it mostly parts or time or both as well as difficult.  thanks

This only works for a short time. Uncle did this on his series I D15 and it worked for a year.....Now 2 guys can stand on the gear shift and the minute you let the foot clutch out it pops out of 3rd.
We can blow smoke up each others skirt all day about shift forks and detents and shaft end play and all the other fixes. Only way to fix a D series jumping out of gear is to rip the trans apart and replace worn out expensive parts. Not hard to do, just time consuming and pricey

Every time that pops out of gear, it does more damage to the splines. It is possible the gear splines are OK if the collar was replaced now. Proper engagement is also helpful in saving the splines.
