 Topic: Educate me on All Crop drills, got 2 home (pics)

Well, just got the 2 all crop drills home, and noticed a couple differences. The disc openers are different, one drill has a double disc opener, and the other is a single. Whats the difference for? Also, one has a grass seeder box off the back, is this just for a cover crop? Tell me everything you guys know about all crop drills! I am a rookie! Also, pictures of your drills would be great! Lets see em!!
Dog always seems to be in my tractor/implement photos. At least he likes orange paint!

I am thinkin this drive sprocket has never been used, what do you think?
Not sure what that is....
Anyone have a manual? I might need one! haha

You had better protect those plant rate charts with your life !!! Love how good the boxes look !!! The insides are usually rusted out from fertilizer or neglect. You are correct about the main drive unit appearing not to have been used, IT HASN'T !!! Great find !!!

The first with two disks uses the two to open the seed furrow, the second has concave discs that open a fuurow with only one disc. Hope that explains it for you.

Don't know that one, but almost all of the modern drills and planters use two now.

Ryan, thats the picture with the 4 bolts around the sprocket with a metal tag on it, I think! This is all new to me!

I just looked at your pics of the openers again, the single openers look like they are not concave on the left, but, concave on the right, I'm sure they should all be straight . The seed drop tube, if concave openers, would be located just to the left, and directly behind the disc opener.

The old JD's were a strait disk set at an angle if I remember right but my IH has the double. doesn't plug up nearly as bad and i have even used it a time or two to no till.

I will check tomorrow, but I think they are all concave. I think its just one of them obstacle conlusions with the picture and camera angle.

Your single disc have plain bearings. The double disc openers are ball bearing type.I have a copy of all the seed charts. I would like the complete wheel drive assembly to convert from tractor drive. They have something to set on also, than the flimsy stands. As far as single versus double, both have thier pros and cons.BTW, great save there, you should buy a lottery ticket also. HTH Tracy Martin

The drive sprocket looks like 14 tooth. They are for WD and WD45. The CA uses 12 tooth sprocket. How many holes are your drills? HTH Tracy Martin

From what little drill experience I have, the main seed boxes would have had wheat, oats or rye for the initial crop which would also be a cover crop for clover, alfalfa, and or grass mix for hay crop for the following year. The clover, alfalfa and such would be put on with the smaller boxes in back.

Don, I hope you find the lift arms you are looking for!! My brother and I discussed your drill purchase today. I dont want to be too nosey, but what was the price you paid for those two?? Ryan, I don't mind at all, the price is on the auction site anyways. Between the 2 of em, I ended up paying $580. I look at it this way, I have never even seen a snap coupler all crop drill in my local area, ever. I asked grandpa if he knew of any in the area growing up, he said only 1 that he could remember, in the 1950's. I found out later from the neighbors, that my 2 drills were originally purchased in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They were hauled over to my side of the state about 6 years ago.
Actually was workin on one of them tonight! Getting things freed up, loosened up so everything works. Still can't believe the condition of the boxes on the double disk drill, I will have to do a youtube video on em later.

Although there was slight rust on the outside, the inside boxes looked like they were brand new!! I'll pick my dads brain tomorrow and ask him about these AC drills and see what he knows about them. I wonder what years they were made?? I'm sure Norms book would tell. Thanks for keeping them for going to waste. Ryan
