Stanley Mufflers

Isn't the Stanley muffler the one everyone wants or am I thinking of something else. I ordered one from A&I this week and it is a Stanley. It is an oval shaped for a D12 that I use on my D14. It looks like it is made real well.JP

Stanleys are the mufflers that no one wants.  They sound terrible.  Nelson mufflers are original and next to impossible to find.  However, Walker mufflers are a decent replacement.

Stanleys are trash, and all the walkers I have bought lately ended up being Stanleys just in a walker box, the stanleys are seriously junk

I guess I did have it mixed up. The last one I bought from A&I didn't look like it was too good but I got it in about 2004 and I use it a lot. I am happy with it. I know the 14 never came out with an oval muffler but I hate the sound of the round one and after a little while they are too loud for me. I would have to replace the round ones every year or two. I use mine a lot and like the sound of the oval. Mine also has a cream steering wheel and I painted it myself and put several coats of clear on it and my hands don't turn black every time I use it. I always hated that old black one so when I fixed it up a few years ago I went with the cream steering wheel. The oval that is on there now 

I cut a oval in the hood and put a series 4 D17 OEM on my 45.It was great (QUIET) and that tractor did all the heavy lifting. Something happened to it(I don't remember)and replaced with Stanley. Way too noisy. Vibration and tree limb took care of that one. The 220 took over the heavy lifting so I went to a Walker which is really close if not the same as the original 45 sound. It's the planting,bladeing,bush hogging tractor now and I wear ear plugs.

Have a 185 that has the original Nelson muffler on it that was on it when it was delivered in '78. Sounds much better than even a brand new Stanley and still is in great condition; solid as a rock. Tractor has always been well maintained and stored inside, though.

 Walker mufflers   22028  &  22043  no longer  made.  Have  tried to buy  through several suppliers,  stanleys  come in walker  box.         Tony

I run a chrome curved from steiner on mine. Its loud, sounds nice though. Sure got a lot of attention at the plow day last weekend. I wore ear plugs. I usually run a muffler on it though. A Stanley, sounds fine to me. But I've never had or heard a nelson.

My objection to the Stanley is that it doesn't have the skirt on the bottom that covers the connection to the manifold.  Without that, water can get into the engine (at least for those that must park the tractor outside).  Also the backet and clamp arrangement is mickey mouse.

  I bought a chrome pipe to put on my dads 45, and after 10 minutes he told me to "get that loud thing off and put the muffler back on".  So it went on ebay, lol.
