| Isn't the Stanley muffler the one everyone wants or am I thinking of something else. I ordered one from A&I this week and it is a Stanley. It is an oval shaped for a D12 that I use on my D14. It looks like it is made real well.JP |

Jack, Nelson is the good muffler, then Walker. The Stanleys are not much pumpkin. They are not offset on the ovals correctly. HTH Tracy Martin ------------- No greater gift than healthy grandkids! |

Stanleys are the mufflers that no one wants. They sound terrible. Nelson mufflers are original and next to impossible to find. However, Walker mufflers are a decent replacement. FYI: D14s never came with oval mufflers. | Most of the folks want the Nelson or Walker and many don't like the Stanley mufflers. That's what I've gathered here on this site. To me the Stanley mufflers don't last long at all...nothing like the Nelson or Walker mufflers do. Just my personal opinion though. Rick |

Well, I've had my D15 II Stanley muffler for about 10 years, and our stanley underhood on the 38 B for about the same. Both have spent plenty of time under the stars and rain due to various circumstances. I've never had a Walker or Nelson, so perhaps they are much better. But my $60 muffler has lasted 10 years with no rust or problems, so I figured I'm comfortable with selling them. I think Tony Carbaugh has the Walkers. I don't know who has Nelsons anymore. I guess I did have it mixed up. The last one I bought from A&I didn't look like it was too good but I got it in about 2004 and I use it a lot. I am happy with it. I know the 14 never came out with an oval muffler but I hate the sound of the round one and after a little while they are too loud for me. I would have to replace the round ones every year or two. I use mine a lot and like the sound of the oval. Mine also has a cream steering wheel and I painted it myself and put several coats of clear on it and my hands don't turn black every time I use it. I always hated that old black one so when I fixed it up a few years ago I went with the cream steering wheel. The oval that is on there now
didn't loose its sound until a hole came in it this winter. If this one lasts that long I will be happy.JP

Since we are on the subject of mufflers, I bought a new one for my c at the Crowe swap meet. My muffler seems to be built well. It is heavy but don't have any markings on it. Anyone have an idea which one I bought? I didn't have an under the hood muffler so I just bought it because I need one bad. Also, what is that little hole in the top of the muffler neck for? And why does it have to be half way smashed together? FYI Dustin, that arts way mower works awesome!!! ------------- Can't fix stupid |

I cut a oval in the hood and put a series 4 D17 OEM on my 45.It was great (QUIET) and that tractor did all the heavy lifting. Something happened to it(I don't remember)and replaced with Stanley. Way too noisy. Vibration and tree limb took care of that one. The 220 took over the heavy lifting so I went to a Walker which is really close if not the same as the original 45 sound. It's the planting,bladeing,bush hogging tractor now and I wear ear plugs. Stanley sounds crappy.

I put a glass pack on my D-17. To extend the pipe, I brazed the outside tube of a shock absorber to the glass pack. It is noisy but not as noisy as a Stanley. What is the the correct Walker muffler number for a series II D-17? Could someone post a templet of the oval hole for a D-17 series III or IV |

| I keep bending mine on the tree limbs when mowing. the stanel mufflers are availalbe localy so thats what I put on. One wd45 has a walker on it I have not noticed a differance. My CA with a sanley with 6" cut off the bottom so it sits down in the hood is much loader that the C which is as it came from the store. |

Have a 185 that has the original Nelson muffler on it that was on it when it was delivered in '78. Sounds much better than even a brand new Stanley and still is in great condition; solid as a rock. Tractor has always been well maintained and stored inside, though. Nelsons are definitely the best!

I know that some will cringe when I say this, but what about the chrome pipes I've seen on some? Either the straight or the turnout, are those muffled at all or just straight piped? I like how they look but don't know if I'd want to listen to it for hours on end...or maybe i'd enjoy it? ;)

I run a chrome curved from steiner on mine. Its loud, sounds nice though. Sure got a lot of attention at the plow day last weekend. I wore ear plugs. I usually run a muffler on it though. A Stanley, sounds fine to me. But I've never had or heard a nelson. Carl. |

I run one of those double-wall chrome straight pipes from Steiner, etc. on my WD. May not be some people's cup of tea but I think it sounds awesome! It is loud with a nice throaty sound but not deafening, and if you rev it up and throttle back quick you can pop a nice flame out the top!

| My objection to the Stanley is that it doesn't have the skirt on the bottom that covers the connection to the manifold. Without that, water can get into the engine (at least for those that must park the tractor outside). Also the backet and clamp arrangement is mickey mouse. |

I bought a chrome pipe to put on my dads 45, and after 10 minutes he told me to "get that loud thing off and put the muffler back on". So it went on ebay, lol.
I have run a stanley on my WD, then went to a nelson, HUGE difference in sound, it made the tractor have that nice AC "gutsy" sound when it's under a load. Well worth every extra penny. Of all people, Lyle Wacker was the guy that told me that "you have a beautiful WD, but you really need a Nelson on there." He was right......
