I am having a hard time finding square head hardware.
Are there good online sources?  Fastenal wants $5.15
for a (single) 1/2-13 x 1" grade 5 , but just $0.65 for
a grade 2.

I just found a few places that carry square head bolts in various grades.  See below.

This is just a few I found.  Just do a search for Grade 5 square head bolts.

restored a case trip plow last summer which had all square head bolts, didn't have much luck finding much of anything. the grade 8 bolts I needed were $36 apiece from fastenal, mcmaster-carr had them but wasn't much cheaper. I don't understand is it that much more work to make a square head instead of a hex head?

Bill, did that Case plow originallly come with Gr 8 Bolts?
Sounds like overkill, maybe?
I would guess Gr 8 square head bolts and nuts would be just a bit rare!

You have to shop a round to find some items. I think grade 8 would be rare.
My neighbor needed som special bolt for a JD that he modified. Fastenal wanted $9.95 each and had to order them. He made a few phone call and found them at a Case-IH dealer for $.95 each in stock. cost hi $9.00 instead of $90.00. Bob

Here in N. Mich. we have Mid State Bolt and screw. They have a web site. You might be able to get them there.

There is one on the west side of Lansing also. Prices are much more reasonable than Fastenal.

Trouble with Fastenall is when they add on shipping for the dang things after the fact of the price , so like the hela-coils I bought for $1.00 each came to $12 for shipping , seeing as they were mailed in a flat pack for less than $2.00

Makes me feel lucky as I have a local hardware store (old fashion) that still has bins full of them although they may be only grade 2-- not sure.

I got the ones I needed through Lowes, had them in bins and galvanized to boot.  For longer than they had I bought nuts and all thread, ground down the galvanize and welded then painted the weld with zinc chromate spray primer.

I just had a quote for all of the WC square head bolts.  We have a fastenal store near us so there is now shipping cost the quote came to $35.00 for all of them.  I know the specs are correct.  They average just over one dollar a bolt all number twos.  I was going to get one grade 8 bolt and it was $30.00 on its own.  There does seem to be a big jump in value which seems to indicate they will make some of these but don't stock them.  Grade 8 bolts aren't too cheap for large size bolt for hex head.
Over all not too bad considering that in 40 years I dare you to try to find any parts for something you buy today.  Some TV's they don't make replacement parts now right off the shelf.
I do think its worth the cost if your restoring but if its a work tractor the hex head from the stock in our barn would be going in.  Which is kinda funny since I've replaced a lot of hex head with square heads over the years because we had them.
If you have a few to order ask for a quote.
