Parts price check

I had a customer call me today on some pricing that he did on an 8050 head gasket failure. He is doing the work on it and I consider him to be quite capable. For some reason, it had a broken head bolt. That's kind of odd in itself. Anyway, new short head bolts from Agco are $175.00 a piece?????  He was going to replace all twenty of those and probably the long ones too.  Oddly, the six long ones are only $53.00 each. Needless to say, that Idea went out the window. He said that he was quoted  $153.50 for each new exhaust valve and $41.57 for each new intake valve.  $310.00 for a bare head gasket and $598.00 for a head gasket set????  Now, I know that after market parts are available for a much cheaper price and Agco is likely sourcing these parts from other companies also, but Great Caesers Ghost, has stuff really went this high??   Reede, is this correct?

If he’s looking on agco parts website for prices you have to watch. Some prices come up as price for pack qty. so it shows for that short head bolt 192.45 per 5. 38.49 each. Now this is for the dealer I have chosen, your prices might vary some. The valves and the gasket unfortunately appear to be correct. Nothing is getting cheaper

True story. When I was in highschool I worked for a guy who had a high hour JD 4760 and mid way through planting season it developed a antifreeze leak it turns out it was a head bolt that goes into a water jacket and the head had snapped off flush. He just kept adding coolant and finished planting. After planting was done I drilled a hole and pounded a old screwdriver into it ant backed out the bolt. The new bolt was $17 and the tube of thread sealer was $3. For $20 problem solved. Used the tractor last fall and he said it hasn't leaked a drop sense so I guess headbolts can fail at random as the metal ages

AGCO prices are outrageous. Recently rebuilt my power steering pump on my series 1 D17. Needed a bearing in the pump behind the seal to the generator. $44 for a small bearing. As I got into the pump further I decided to replace the remaining 3 bearings and inquired with my local machine shop if they could get them. They could indeed for a price of less than $7 each! So they replaced the other the 3 bearings. Saved $37 on each bearing. I should have asked them first.

Grateful we can get parts through AGCO also, just stating the high cost of parts through them.

As said above be happy things are available.  Called our JD dealer yesterday for a starter for our 5020, after 10 minutes they came back and said discontinued from all sources.  Hy-capacity has them and will be here in a few days

I will check in to on Monday.

A bit of good news, I needed a new fuel strainer for my D17 diesel. Takes the tall fuel bowl. It not only leaked but the on/off was really worn. Went to Rural King and they had the correct fuel strainer with AGCO part number for $28.99. $10 less than any other place I found on line. Best Buy that I’ve had in awhile. When your doing a rebuild every penny counts. Other than a paint job on my WD and 160 this will be my last big project. Just can’t justify the high cost of parts.

Rick,was it cost of material that caused you to stop doing clutch work? Thanks.

I know some tractor pullers who use 9/16" NC hex head black phosphate bolts from Caterpillar for their head bolts. No where near that expensive.
