I had a customer call me today on some pricing that he did on an 8050 head gasket failure. He is doing the work on it and I consider him to be quite capable. For some reason, it had a broken head bolt. That's kind of odd in itself. Anyway, new short head bolts from Agco are $175.00 a piece?????  He was going to replace all twenty of those and probably the long ones too.  Oddly, the six long ones are only $53.00 each. Needless to say, that Idea went out the window. He said that he was quoted  $153.50 for each new exhaust valve and $41.57 for each new intake valve.  $310.00 for a bare head gasket and $598.00 for a head gasket set????  Now, I know that after market parts are available for a much cheaper price and Agco is likely sourcing these parts from other companies also, but Great Caesers Ghost, has stuff really went this high??   Reede, is this correct?

I would not hesitate to reuse old ones, the break may have been a rusty one, pitting does create a weak point. We just leave the rocker assy off and put in 6 donor short ones in those locations, and torque all 26 down in 25# increments. Then, after going over them several more times and none move, then take the 6 donor bolts out and put the rocker assy on, carefully positioning the stands and pushrods in place. Then torque the 6 long ones in the same 25# increments. Now that I run head studs in the puller, I use 6 rocker stands scavenged from an old rocker assy, so I don't have to remove the studs. The offset tool to get to the bolts works ok, but it does flex enough that the bolts under the rocker shaft will relax once rockers are installed.

If he’s looking on agco parts website for prices you have to watch. Some prices come up as price for pack qty. so it shows for that short head bolt 192.45 per 5. 38.49 each. Now this is for the dealer I have chosen, your prices might vary some. The valves and the gasket unfortunately appear to be correct. Nothing is getting cheaper

True story. When I was in highschool I worked for a guy who had a high hour JD 4760 and mid way through planting season it developed a antifreeze leak it turns out it was a head bolt that goes into a water jacket and the head had snapped off flush. He just kept adding coolant and finished planting. After planting was done I drilled a hole and pounded a old screwdriver into it ant backed out the bolt. The new bolt was $17 and the tube of thread sealer was $3. For $20 problem solved. Used the tractor last fall and he said it hasn't leaked a drop sense so I guess headbolts can fail at random as the metal ages

AGCO prices are outrageous. Recently rebuilt my power steering pump on my series 1 D17. Needed a bearing in the pump behind the seal to the generator. $44 for a small bearing. As I got into the pump further I decided to replace the remaining 3 bearings and inquired with my local machine shop if they could get them. They could indeed for a price of less than $7 each! So they replaced the other the 3 bearings. Saved $37 on each bearing. I should have asked them first.

Every manufactures prices are getting high.  Everything period is high.  Just be glad you can still get parts from AGCO for this stuff.  I talk to guys from other brands and parts for 50-60 year old tractors are not available.  We give AGCO a lot of crap but I'm still impressed of what stuff we can still get. Start pricing filters for newer equipment and its nothing to rack up a $500 bill in just filters.

Grateful we can get parts through AGCO also, just stating the high cost of parts through them.

Yes, Ryan i too am very grateful for AGCO.  They are certainly not perfect.   However, a high priced part is always a better option than a no longer available part.  Take care!

As said above be happy things are available.  Called our JD dealer yesterday for a starter for our 5020, after 10 minutes they came back and said discontinued from all sources.  Hy-capacity has them and will be here in a few days

Yup price tag sucks but like said, it’s sometimes amazing you can buy a part from. What is it the third different company change for old equipment that doesn’t even have same brand name

Pricing just keeps going up n' up. Parts is nuttin'. Try copper on for size. Just got my wire order in last month. Boy, my butt still hurts on that one! Even Jo Jo said "is this invoice correct"?  Her hand was shaking when she wrote out the check. That's a first! Trying to keep pricing down on these wiring systems is really getting tough!  If things don't plane out soon, we're gonna be outta' the wiring business......  Ouch

A bit of good news, I needed a new fuel strainer for my D17 diesel. Takes the tall fuel bowl. It not only leaked but the on/off was really worn. Went to Rural King and they had the correct fuel strainer with AGCO part number for $28.99. $10 less than any other place I found on line. Best Buy that I’ve had in awhile. When your doing a rebuild every penny counts. Other than a paint job on my WD and 160 this will be my last big project. Just can’t justify the high cost of parts.

It's getting super crazy out in the world any more...lining material for brakes is sky high and it's hard to make a living with things like that, but I still refuse the junk crap that's out there! I still have many loyal customers though and to them THANKS!!! To the ones jumping the prices up, well...they know where they can go...

Rick, was it cost of material that caused you to stop doing clutch work? Thanks.

I know some tractor pullers who use 9/16" NC hex head black phosphate bolts from Caterpillar for their head bolts. No where near that expensive.

Thanks Reede for your input on this subject. Those prices while still high, are certainly more acceptable. It's a vastly changed market out there, whether it's parts or wholegoods.
