Still works here in Up NY. We have many Amish families here (hundreds) and their ice houses are still packed with sawdust that lasts them all year!

The pole barn with rice straw covered in plaster/stucco. This was left to put a window in that never happened. All electrical has exposed pipe and conduit,and plumbing is the same but all inside the building. The common bale is 3 strings 15 x 23 ,and you can see the opening is 23 plus the stucco. So the wall is over 2 foot thick.
