in the beginning it had gear lube, like 80-90wt ...... If the seals were leaking, many have put a grease zerk on the fill plug and pumped it full of grease.

x2. I fill all mine with JD Corn Head Grease. It's good stuff! Granddad had it in his post hole digger and brush hog gear boxes as well.
