    Posted: 09 Feb 2017 at 1:47pm
I have a 52 CA that I recently repainted.  I installed a new stanley muffler with a rain flapper.  I am getting a lot of soot on the hood.  Before I painted the tractor it had a straight pipe with a turn out away from the tractor.  I never recall getting soot on the hood, but the tractor looked so rough I may not have noticed.

I like the way it sounds now, but I need to get rid of the soot.  Does anyone have any insight?

Thanks
Lynn

Put a turn out on the muffler would be the only solution.

May also wait until the "new" wears off the muffler?

I had the same problem after I painted my WD45. Sometimes starting, I'd get a little blown out and deflect down on the hood. I went to NAPA and bought a 90 degree exhaust pipe and cut it to blow off to the side. no more soot.

Lean the mixture out a bit and run some Seafoam thru it. If there is soot coming out, there is soot inside for whatever reason.

If you don't run it very long, it might be condensation, carrying the soot out.  Always run long enough to get to operating temp.  Might also want a turn out on it, for running cold...

I have the marvel carb with only idle mixture adjustment. I will double check the adjustment. Has anyone ever found the need to run a smaller main jet on a stock engine?

Condensation. On a cool day with plenty of humidity it's going to happen for a minute or so until the muffler warms.
