Ron, you have to remove the shift top and turn it over so you can remove the reverse lock out mechanism, then you can remove the lock ring and pull the shifter lever.

I just did one, maybe this will help?
Be very careful when removing the rails- the detent balls come out with considerable force! And to remove the reverse lockout, you have to unhook the rod and let it travel farther than the lever actually allows. Clear as mud, but you will see what I mean.
