I have been working on my 185 doing odds and ends. I put a primer pump on the system and hooked the lights back up. Issue is I tried to start it and when I shove the clutch in and hit the starter it kept cranking after I took my finger off the button. I thought the starter button stuck because of the cold, but it wasn't. It cranked and then all of a sudden quit cranking.
Well I put the charger back on but now I turn the key on the oil light comes on, the lights will work and my primer pump will run when I switch it on, but the starter won't do anything. I tried crossing the solenoid but it only clicks. I need advice, thanks in advance, Jeff |

Sounds to me like you got some wires crossed when you put the primer pump on. I had a similar issue when I replaced some wiring and key switch on my D17 IV

If it's not the wiring you did on it then it is the solenoid assuming the battery is good. I would suspect the starter last. You may also want to take a look at the connections between the battery to solenoid to starter and make sure they are good and clean.
You can test the starter by just using a set of jumper cables and directly connect the battery to the starter to make sure it will turn over but make sure it's in neutral with brakes locked.

Well I went out and disconnected everything I hooked up. Still nothing. Apparently there has been some wiring done over the years so I have more to track down. I am leaning toward the solenoid stuck. I was off the tractor getting channell locks and it was still cranking with the switch off when it happened. I am wondering if the cold effected it. I will test it and the starter tomorrow.

You probably have that miserable Lucas starter on it. The solonoid is probably fried. Also the field windings may be bad too as they are weak. Not a good starter. The Delco like used on the 180s were much better.
