i have a early d17 and the snap coupler release lever and the brake lock lever arent made for a knob like most ive seen. Does this make it a series 1?  Serial number is D171154D thanks.

your s/n makes it a series 1 57 model year.
someone mite have modified or taken the knobs off. it sould have them on it. hope this helps.

I looked it over they havent been modified.  The brake lock handle comes up and is curved no place for a knob looks factory havent seen another like it. the snap couple release is just a straight shaft no threads or nothing for a knob.

i would say some one cut them off cause it sould have them my 57 has them.

or the knobs just slip on shaft when i go out today i'll see if thats how they are. gotta haul some firewood with the d-17 today. i'll let you know.

My early D-17 has the knobs, Although a friends early D-14 does not have the knobs.

Maybe the real early ones did not have them?

matt thats what im thinking too. I looked at mine today and mine are threaded on and my s/n is 3594

Thats what i was thinking my other two D17s have threaded knobs guess thats one thing less i have to buy for it lol.

Matt I went out a look the 17 I have It is early like yours. Serial Number D171138 It has a knob on the snap coupler release but the brake lock is like what you described.
