    Posted: 19 Dec 2011 at 10:24am
Hey guys need some help.  My son is going to start mowing hay with me this next year.  He has been raking for the last couple of years.  I want to start him on a sickle mower/cond and don't want something real expensive since he has never mowed before (you never know with 9+ foot hanging out to the side of the tractor).  I seen a couple of not so good post (on this site) on a new holland 489 so I thought I would ask would you all what you use and recommend.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Just make sure the wobble box is tight. It's about a $1000 for a reman one and they aren't that fun to change. I've been noticing a different series of older NH binds that have a simple offset over bearings for a wobble mechanisem out in the open easy to service that I am going to look into if I go bigger than my 474. By the way the 489 I got for parts takes up the whole road if that matters to you. Some people had good luck with that syle just check yours over better than I did mine.

I have a NH 477 , I can run nicely with the wd and in thicker hay I have to run slow. But 100 Bales acre I run in 3rd. , and that is on some steeper hills too. In thick wet hay she will pack full and that is a pain, but I'm talking 140-150 bales to acre or 2.75 tons to acre. Nice size to move down the road. You can still get parts for it.

We've been running a 488 for about 10 years with no big problems, check out the wobble box good, and keep it greased. They are a bit wide for road transport.

After buying a Hesston 1060 discbine, I can't figure out why anyone ever made a sickle mower. I can mow alfalfa as fast as the 190XT will go and it never plugs up and it cuts really clean. I have a JD sickle MOCO sitting here but don't intend to ever use it again.

It is a trailing type disc mower with conditioning rollers or flails in it.

I agree with Dave on the discbine. Having said that I have a 488 NH that is a good machine in average (not thick) hay. Can cut 6 mph in alfalfa with it. Go 8 with a GEHL discbine.

Not sure about prices where you guys are. A disc mower around here start at 3500 and go up from there, average around 5000.   For me to go a little faster and do just a bit better of a job not worth it, most of the fields I do you would be getting into trouble going 6 MPH.  In time I may get one for second cutting, but for now I'll use the 1000-1500 haybine.

I bought my Hesston discbine at an auction for $2300. Best buy I have made. I hated constantly unplugging that JD MOCO. With the JD, I mowed at about 4 MPH. With the discbine, I mow at about 10 MPH. Less than half the time actually mowing.
