Going to pick-up a wagon running gear in the next week or so - it is an Allis Chalmers 701.
The wagon gear has a broken spindle on the rear. It is broken between the two races at either end of the spindle, a clean break. I'm a little suspect in fixing what I think would be hardened steel - to some extent via V-grooving and welding. My question is - where can one buy a replacement spindle? I looked for a part number on AGCO's website as I thought (???) they were the keeper of the Allis Chalmers tractor parts after the buy out from Deutz-Allis. Funny thing is - they list Agco and Agco-Allis - not Allis Chalmers, which kind of surprised me. Do you don't go to Agco if you need a part for a WD45? Anyhow - thoughts on a weld repair on this broken spindle? Any source recommendations for a replacement spindle? Any info is much appreciated. Thanks!!!!!!!! Bill

Be patient and try to find a used match....these spindles fit many things...remember that this was probably was built by Electric Wheel.....I do not have a spare in that size...I had to fix a New Holland wagon a few years ago.. the heavy duty one was over 300....

Depending on how good your welding is, they can be welded. It was not unusual at all that when a over the road trailer came in with a burned bearing and ruined spindle, we would call an outfit out of St. Louis to come out and put a new spindle. Just the stub. I don't remember the number of the rod he used, but we never had one come back. A good welding supply shop could probably help on this. Anyway, it can be made to hold.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WELDING. THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN GET IT BACK GUN BARREL STRAIGHT. IF IT IS OFF THE SLIGHTIST YOUR BEARINGS WILL SOON FAIL. IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO TAKE THE REAR OF THE WAGON TO A MACHINE SHOP TO MAKE A REPLACEMENT, REMOVE BROKEN STUB AND WELD IN NEW AXLE. IF DONE CORRECTLY NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO NOTICE AND WILL BE GOOD AS NEW. YOU COULD ALSO LOOK TO SUPPLIERS OF HUBS AND AXLES BECAUSE THERE IS USUALLY REPLACEMENTS AVAILABLE IF YOU CAN COMPARE THE MEASUREMENTS OF YOUR AXLE TO A REPLACEMENT.I HAVE REPAIRED MANY TRYING DIFFERENT METHODS AND THIS IS THE ONE THAT WORKS.

Like the other earlier posts, Shoups should have what you need. If not, then try EZ-Trail Inc's parts dept. Here's they're website link. I think your AC 701 has either a 1-5/8" or 1-3/4" spindle??

Mike I see you're adamant about this, but I have to respectfully disagree. It all depends how careful he is. He was asking if it could be done and was just commenting it could be done. However, that being said, your suggestion is the best way.
