D14 Paint

I spent a good part of the winter rebuilding and sand blasting a D14 that I pulled out of the weeds.  I want to paint it myself but I find all the different types of paint confusing.  I've done some painting but I'm no expert.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of paint to use?

I bought a Harbor Freight paint gun (about $50). The first time I cleaned it, I lost one of the gaskets. I called my local store to see if they had it in stock. They stock nothing. The manager gave me an 800 number to call for parts. When I called the number and gave him the part number I needed, he said it was not available. When I asked if he had any idea when they would have one, he grumpily told me that he said it was not available.

Painting your tractor yourself can be rewarding if you take your time and test spray some parts off of the tractor first before starting on the entire tractor.(like floorboards, fenders that have been removed) This gives you some practice HVLP(hi volume low pressure)gun works well. Setting up the gun correctly is extremely important. A piece of white cardboard on the wall is a great way to check your settings. Stay 12-16” away and do a test spray. Set it to a fine mist that provides coverage but not a bunch of paint or it will run. The first coat should lightly cover the part your painting. Follow up coats provides more color and coverage. As you paint you will get the hang of it, just take your time and you will realize that after each coat the color will really start to look nice. If you don’t put it on heavy, take your time and stay 12-16” away you shouldn’t have any runs. It takes practice. This is not a one day or 1 coat job. Several coats will give a more rewarding paint job. Use a good primer first, I always use etching primer first when I take it down to bare metal followed by a regular primer. Since this is your first paint job I would suggest the AGCO paint, it is less expensive but a good quality paint. I use PPG paint but have used the AGCO paint with good results.

What color of orange are you going to paint it ?? The original color is Persian Orange #1 from 1934 thru 1960. The next color was Persian Orange #2 from 1960 thru 1977.
