I spent a good part of the winter rebuilding and sand blasting a D14 that I pulled out of the weeds.  I want to paint it myself but I find all the different types of paint confusing.  I've done some painting but I'm no expert.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of paint to use?

If you're OK with painting it the newer orange color like a D-15, buy 4 cases of Rust-Oleum Allis-Chalmers orange from Thiesens and spray paint it with cans. Order four cases (6 cans per case) and chances are good they all came from the same batch. Did you sandblast the entire tractor bare ??? because that will take about double the paint to cover it back up.

.

I paint like a heathen... Harbor Freight $20 'purple sprayer' on an $80 air tank, using a gallon or so of Rust-Oleum implement paint in the approximate color.

Good for a working tractors, probably not what you want for a parade show tractor. I'd leave my working tractors in their work clothes but I have a lot of non-farmers around me and rusty equipment frightens them.

Auto painter I know said the difference in quality paint jobs is just experience painting a lot of stuff.

Get a 2 part paint (paint + hardener) won't flake off...

I bought a Harbor Freight paint gun (about $50). The first time I cleaned it, I lost one of the gaskets. I called my local store to see if they had it in stock. They stock nothing. The manager gave me an 800 number to call for parts. When I called the number and gave him the part number I needed, he said it was not available. When I asked if he had any idea when they would have one, he grumpily told me that he said it was not available.

The gun went back for a refund the next day. When I told the manager why I was returning it, she said quietly that she was not surprised.

I bought a gun from Eastwood, that I really like and it has a two year warranty.

If you sandblasted, it should be primed before you paint. If you really care how it looks, you need to have a perfect surface before you paint.

I. personally, have good luck using AGCO paint (Valspar) with hardener. At around $45 per quart, it's a lot less than automotive paint and it seems to hold up similarly to original equipment paint.

Alkyne Enamel is the stuff that you paint swing sets and lawn chairs with.. It dries to the touch in 3-4 hours but takes a week to really get hard... And then it is still effected if you spill gasoline on it..

Acrylic Enamel is for trucks / cars . It will have a "hardener" that you add a few ounces per quart of paint to make it GET HARD QUICK and be less effected by gasoline.  ( you can actually use some hardeners with some Alkyne Enamels and get a pretty good finish)...

Beyond that there are epoxy ( 2 part paints) and others that really cost money.

A  "GOOD but CHEAP" way to go is the Alkyne Enamel with a hardener.. Less expensive to use Valspar or other similar.... More expensive if you go to the local Paint Shop and get PPG or other more NAME BRAND Auto paint..(Acrylic)

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Painting your tractor yourself can be rewarding if you take your time and test spray some parts off of the tractor first before starting on the entire tractor.(like floorboards, fenders that have been removed) This gives you some practice HVLP(hi volume low pressure)gun works well. Setting up the gun correctly is extremely important. A piece of white cardboard on the wall is a great way to check your settings. Stay 12-16” away and do a test spray. Set it to a fine mist that provides coverage but not a bunch of paint or it will run. The first coat should lightly cover the part your painting. Follow up coats provides more color and coverage. As you paint you will get the hang of it, just take your time and you will realize that after each coat the color will really start to look nice. If you don’t put it on heavy, take your time and stay 12-16” away you shouldn’t have any runs. It takes practice. This is not a one day or 1 coat job. Several coats will give a more rewarding paint job. Use a good primer first, I always use etching primer first when I take it down to bare metal followed by a regular primer. Since this is your first paint job I would suggest the AGCO paint, it is less expensive but a good quality paint. I use PPG paint but have used the AGCO paint with good results.

What color of orange are you going to paint it ?? The original color is Persian Orange #1 from 1934 thru 1960. The next color was Persian Orange #2 from 1960 thru 1977.

Or you could do like the owner of the half engine tractor currently in my shop for repairs, just brush paint it. It doesn't look all that bad unless you get real close.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY
