Can someone explain the difference between a rock and a stone? Is it a size thing,a weight thing or a composition deal? Thanks

A stone is a rock that has been manipulated in some way. The rock in the bottom of the quarry is rock. After it is processed it is a stone.

A rock is large enough you can not pick it up and throw it. A stone you can, i.e "a stones throw away". Where gravel fits into these definitions I have no idea!

Darn I was hoping someone wanted to by some. Lots of it around here. Some is splittable to make nice flagstone.
Laying in the field they were always rocks. But get them gathered up in a pile the for sale sign always say STONE FOR SALE. But Red Banks explanation about altered/manipulated makes sense.

Back in the old days we'd look in the dictionary for the answer. Today,"What's a dictionary"?
So I looked.Amusing sorta. Rock was an aggregate of minerals. Stone said rock then spoke of polished stones....too much other stuff to type. Edited by SteveM C/IL - 09 Feb 2020 at 6:48pm |

Size matters. You can carry a stone, but you need a tractor to move a rock. |

From my years of quality control work for a aggregate producer, rock was a non proportions material which mean it was used by it's self and stone was a proportions material that was use to be blended or mixed with other material, like cement (concrete) and asphalt and I'm sure it could be a million more things.

rock can be graded by size in it's natural form (river rock) by it's size after screening - most is worn or polished by water action into sizes from about 3" down to buckshot size .
Larger sizes become either crushed to a usable size and again graded to different sizes from rip-rap to ag-lime powder . Stone used in concrete is normally 1 1/2" or smaller , in asphalt it's 1/2" to 3/8" . Then there genuine Indian Love Stones (big FU**en rocks) or Lever-rites (leave it right where it is) So it's all about size - so size does matter in some things !

My question came about because of the local BTO that pulls multiple machines called "rock" picker-not the entire name brand- but I drove past the dumpings of the said machines after they canvased a true 1/4 of farm ground and the dumpings were baseball-basketball sized "stones"??

LOL If you are standing with a rock to your left, then a hard place must be to your right? In the Bible, it tells that some were taken out back and stoned, and we should build our house upon the rock. Chuck Berry gave us Rock-n-Roll music, while the Rolling Stones took their name from a Muddy Waters tune and Restless Heart sang "That Rock Won't Roll". And if that isn't enough, we have a pizza stone. Keep your nose to the grindstone.

Yeah, as they say, Keep your nose to the grindstone, your shoulder into the wheel, and your ear to the ground. Now try to work in that position!

Farmer was picking up rocks in his field when a man from the city drove by. The city man was interested in what the farmer was doing so turned around and came back. He walked into the field where the farmer was working and asked him what job he was performing? The farmer replied picking up rocks! The city man then asked where did the rocks come from? Farmer replied the glacier brought them! The city man then thought he would act smart and asked the farmer where did the glacier go ? Farmer replied back to get more rocks!
