Well,,I'll be,,,just yesterday I was using the top of the trunk to lay my hand tools on and I did notice some red lookin ants coming out of a crack in the side of the trunk,,,,so I hit em with some Home Defence,,,they was gone a little later,,,,

gee, I need to 'outsouce' jobs to you DJ ! Only $70. I charge $100 just to try to get rid of the business( rather work on MY stuff...). Most everyone here is north of $120 / hr for ANY trade. That's one BIG tree you had....Biggest one here was 8-10" with LOTS of runner-babies. I'm guessin the grounds pretty dry and the stump won't rot or get ants in it too soon ?

Yeah,,Shameless,,I had been slowly having to move some of my tools outside of garage cause I been runnin out of room inside and can't hardly get to my 55,,and I have made ole Joe a promise to finish up the projects I now HAVE to in order to get back on the car. "Tools" like my pressure washer, generator, chop saw, chrome polisher, bead blaster, the new Arc welder and the spare mig welder and electric stove for . So,,I'm just bout finished up on a 6 Ft X 22 Ft Lean to,,, I added to south side of garage to get em all out of the weather,,lookin real nice just need to install the flashing between the add-on and garage roof. The Mulberry tree trunk, now cut to bout 40" high is gonna be perfect for when I bolt the anvil on it and right in the center of the lean to,,,, I have upset some people cause I raised my flat rate to $70/hour to discourage any more government jobs,,,but it is what it is,,I guess,,,,,Chit,,the 3 local dealers get $128/ hour so I figure I should be worth half of their price,,,,,

Joe...if'n you cut that trunk off and take it inside your shop, mount the anvil, and it should last your lifetime and someone elses. Gramps had his on one and it served him, my Dad and me until the stockholders got ahold of it.

bore holes in the tree before you cut it down, the tree reacts to the bore holes and sucks in the roundup killed several trees that the tree huggers said I couldn't cut down because they were alive.

Well,,Jay you must know me by now,,,,,, I was just trying to do like you and get two birds with one rock,,,, But,,I did read on one of the other forums that I bother is that the best method to mount an anvil is on a big "wooden" stump as it will absorb the kinetic energy transferred from the anvil and blows from your hammer of choice,,,,,,,,, Actually,,,an older gentleman told me the same thing and he had a BIG anvil bolted to a tree trunk in his shop. With some effort, you could walk it to other location. The stump was bout 24" round and bout 36" high. He asked me to hit the anvil with a 3# shop hammer and it was like one of those "dead blow" mallets as I did not feel the vibrations coming back at me,,,! So,,,the Mulberry tree donated its trunk for my anvil. I didn't really want to kill the tree, and if it starts sending up shoots,,I'll just trim em off. The trunk was bout 22" diameter and I cut it bout waist high to me and is flat across.

The last 2 mulberrys I had ( mother, daughter) I did the diesel, burn method. Took days as it slowly smoldery-burned it all. I drilled lots of 1" holes, 1 foot deep with a spade bit, filled with diesel, came back next morning and lit it up. Need big holes to let air in,smoke out... I woodn't use a stump in the ground for an anvil base BTW. Stump is still kinda living or rotting in the soil...NOT a stable platform....cept for a maybe flower pot.

I finally dumped out what I had left in the quart bottle right on some and bout all I got was a few white spots on the leaves,,,,,,,Guess I'ma check TSC and see if they gots the Tordon...I ain't been in there since Ms. Big Ones gots transferred out to a store in Nebraska,,,,,,,,,sniff, sniff,,,,, Say,,I just remembered something,,,last time I was in there,,(I meant IN the store!!) I picked up a bottle of Cinnamon Sugar by Baker's Select that sure was good with my mornin coffee,,!! I called to see if they still had some and they tell me they no longer carry it. I used to carry a bow saw with me when planting along a fence line or next to a creek, i'd cut off branches overhanging the field while standing up on the tractor, then squirt the cut part with tordon. had it in a spray bottle. by the time of mid summer the whole tree was dead just from that cut branch. mulberry is good firewood, and Joe...if the tree you cut down has a log as long as the width of your lambo...you can mill you out a colorful rear bumper for it! after you kill your stump, and the top is dry, spray some water sealer on the top, that should keep it from rotting away for a couple years. may hafta do repeat treatments each year.

Does your lawn need cutting? Generally speaking, if the grass needs cutting, then sap is runnin, and you can make a fresh cut, about 2" lower than the old cut, to apply the RU in. Cut don't have to be all the way across the stump, just through the bark...

Tordon is the best but straight Roundup will do it. Might have to do a couple treatments with Roundup. Tordon is a one time deal----That's great stuff!

Holy shi$ I think you better come south of the boarder with a red tank labeled diesel fuel and fill it up with roundup before you go home. Never want to run out of fuel.

1 jug ( US gallon) of vinegar 1 cup of salt 3-4 srirts of liquid dish soap I find it best to pour vinegar into open pail, add salt, stir well until dissolved, then add soap, stir to mix in soap. You can poru back into original vinegar jug..just be SURE to remove label and mark it 'KILL ALL'. best to apply 10-12AM, after morning dew is gone but before 'heat of the day'. Usually stuff dies by 3-4PM that day ! Jay |

Have your friend from NE to hike his leg on it a time or two.
The only down sided will be that the people from the petrify forest will be after you for stealing one of their tree stumps. |

Actually, around here, a big mulberry stump can last for years. We used mulberry for fence posts, as termites didn't seem to like them. Don't know if this holds true, in the desert, though...
