The old boss has a 20-35. His son split it last week to fix the slipping clutch and opened up a can of worms. The bevel gear that drives the tranny from the clutch shaft had been loose and messed up the shaft and the bore of the gear. I bored the gear out but couldn't hold the diameter close because the case hardened surface along the keyway and on both front and back faces pushed the boring bar away but it would cut bigger in the middle of the bore.
Here was my fix, a long ended air grinder in place of the boring bar. For some reason,I can't get the video link to work??????? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcZccQowf5M&feature=youtu.be I also started making a new shaft cause the old one has the keyway for the gear broke out and it needs to be oversize to fit the bore in the gear. Here is what I got done so far. More pics- https://plus.google.com/photos/101907304795732239945/albums/5777436723918204033 Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 16 Aug 2012 at 8:48pm |

I finished the shaft this morning except for the 2 keyways, but didn't take pictures. I guess I'll do that Monday.

I finished the shaft today and fit keys to it. The guy that took it apart wanted the gear to fight tight. He might think again when he goes to assemble it. The bore in the gear is size for size to the shaft so he might have to put a little heat on it to get it together. I made the center part of the shaft about .005 bigger than the original cause the throw out slide is wore some. Seems to fit pretty good.

Well my wife says I am NOT a teacher ( she's blonde don't ya know) but if you want, come on over some time and I'll show ya a few things. Most of what I know has been gathered over the last 40 years, so it might take a while to get it out of me

Charlie,
I would love to spend a day or several with you in the machine shop. My dad took care of all that, it was his profession. He tried to get me into the apprentice program at IR, but I missed out due to my own fault. So my knowledge and skill are sorely lacking. I bought a "baby" lathe with a mill attachment as you reference above, just to learn and make some of the small stuff that floats around in my head. My buddies Keith and Kenny offer advice and simple tips to me, but they are both long-time machinists, so I frustrate them, more than they teach me. I have not forgot your offer, and I just need to send you the package.... Somethings just take me longer than others.... Glenn

Thanks, If you weren't 4-5 hours away I'd take you up on that offer. We have a fairly nice old lathe over at the farm but no one really knows how to use it.

charlie, if you weren't 6-7 states away i'd rent a cot in your shop. meanwhile learning plenty right here on the forum.
btw you could get a job teaching ag including tractor maintenance in riverside county CA in about 35 seconds under the program that pays me. likely elsewhere as well, but for sure here. not a joke.
