I just acquired an CA , several folks told me to be sure and check the hand clutch. I looked all over and couldn't find one. After looking at pictures, I see where it would mount through the platform. My knock out in the sheet metal has never been removed. Is it possible that it was originally ordered without the hand clutch?

Hand clutches were an option so yours must not have come with one. You can still install one but you just need to round up all the parts.

I have included a few pictures at different views to show the hand clutch. Now just keep in mind that the hand clutch on my "CA" is on the left hand side and most are on the right.
Rear view shows on left side.
Front shows on right.
Top view shows on towards the top.
One could have ordered a "CA" three ways, without a hand clutch, clutch on right side or on left side.

I have never seen a CA without the hand clutch. I think if it was mine, I would leave it that way.

Don't worry about the hand clutch too much. Remember that you just bought a 60 year old tractor and some things may need to be fixed. If your "CA" has a hand clutch that slips, go ahead and rebulid it. If you need help there are many on this forum that will be here for you. Once you have a strong clutch you will enjoy your new tractor very much.
Below is a video link of my "CA" pulling a 3-14 mounted plow. Hand clutch does not slip.
Please keep in mind that the "CA" is rated as a two bottom tractor.

So... If a CA could have none, left, or right could one have both left and right? The reason I ask is I also have never seen the clutch on the left, but after seeing it I think I would like my CA with belly mower to have it on the left as I don't have two right arms to run the hand clutch and Hyd lift. I recently bought a parts CA and rather than move my good clutch from the right to the left maybe I could just add the parts one to the left and have two. Am I thinking crazy thoughts?

There is no reason why you can not do this. I often thought about changing my to the left.

You know when we sold them I cannot remember the hand clutch as an option. Also, to my recollection they were all on the right side. However i have been proven wrong before.
I'll have to check Pop's price book.

My 1952 CA has the 'Hand Clutch' on the R/H side, but you can definetly see the outline of the 'knockout' in the floor pan on the L/H side. Gary

Tonight I looked up the CA in Pop's Price Book. Remember the book is dated May 26, 1960. The CA was discontinued in 1957, however, there were some still in "field inventory" or dealer's stock and the description was left in the book. It reads:
"Model CA Tractor
With 10-24 Rear Tires, Power Adjusted Real Wheel Tread, Foot Brakes, Power take-off, Belt Pulley, Hydraulic Control System, Axillary Hand Clutch, SNAP COUPLER TRACTOR BOOSTER indicator, Starter and Lights.
With Dual front tires $ 1,900 weight 2850
With Wide Front $ 1,950 weight 2950
Single Front Tires $ 1.950 weight 2965
There is not indication of less hand clutch and left or right. However, that does not mean it was not made. As you see above yes they were.

My CA had a welded up hand clutch that was braking loose when I got it. I really only wanted the CA to tractor pull with so got a straight one piece axle out of a parts CA and replaced the busted useless clutch axle with it. It is still a CA just without a hand clutch.

There is no way to adjust a slipping hand clutch; one needs to rebuild with new friction, etc to eliminate slippage. Alternatively, they can be bolted/welded together or replaced with a solid pinion shaft from another CA or C.

Littleredrooster Friction, rivets, and springs are available from AGCO; check Sandy Lake. Chris in CT can also supply the friction and rivets (his is better quality than AGCO). Not hard to rebuild. I can send a pdf file with pics if you pm me your regular email

Your local AGCO dealer can get you a friction kit to replace worn friction material. You have to reuse the metal part. All that's involved is riveting the new material to the original metal plate. I'd replace the springs too. They can loose tension over some 60 years time. The hardest part will be getting the clutch assy out of the axle.

If you flip the hand clutch to the left side, won't it work the oppisite way?
