Hey guys I’d like to purchase a back up alternator for my 200. I have factory air and of course the alt drives the Tac. Would anyone happen to know the model of (I believe Delco) an identical drop in replacement? I couldn’t see any numbers without removing unit. Thanks and y’all be extra safe this season! Dana

Captain, i assume your original alternator had an EXTERNAL REGULATOR on it. Newer modles have INTERNAL voltage regulators. Is your alternator original or has been changed ? .... also DELCOS can be 10SI version or 12 SI version... You probably need 100 amps since you have AC and cab......Does your alternator have a two prong plug on the side like you have put on other tractors ??
Here is a link to a 190 tractor and shows the 10SI and 12SI and talks about the "old not used external voltage regulator" ......... look at yours and see what you think you got.. You might be able to wire up as simple as your old tractor was done. |

Thanks Steve on my “old” gen tractors I’ve done 8 conversions since January 10 in my new shop! I’ll scoot up to the shed after coffee and post a pic of what I have. Dana

Finding another 10DN is NOT a difficult issue... JEGs advertises a 100A externally-regulated unit with single-belt pulley for $130... But finding one fitted up for the tachometer drive is the challenge. The back of the case needs to be drilled and tapped for two retention screws, and IIRC the drive requires an extended shaft and seal protruding from the rear, to which the tach drive is connected. I won't claim to the Allis application on this, as I've only seen this on a scant few marine diesel engines that were NOT Allis... but I DO know that the drive unit's gearing must match the alternator's belt drive ratio in order to generate an accurate indication on the mechanical tachometer. Here's one of unknown sourcing... Edited by DaveKamp - 23 May 2023 at 7:04am |

If I'm not mistaken, the DN alternator on a 200 with cab and air was a 55 Amp version, which was enough for most all applications. I put some 72 Amp windings in a few tractors that were pulling the Allis air planters. The planters blowers required additional output. The DNs are easily rebuilt and parts are cheap and readily available.

One other issue I encountered on my 190xt was the pulley that came with the new alternator did not match the old alternator. It was a smaller circumference so I took it off the old one to put on the new one. However, the spindle was not long enough on the 10si alternator. Then I found out I had Delco 12si. Since those Delco 10si models were used in tons of applications, I am not sure you will get the correct matching pulley. You also may have to shim a new the alternator to get the belt alignment correct. You won't know until you install it. I assume I had the tach drive unit at one time but somewhere along the way, mine got replaced without the tach drive. My tach does work but wondering how long it went without working? Explains why I only show 4700 hours on a tractor that definitely has more hours than that on it. I decided to get the old one rebuilt. That way I know everything matches. Bad news about rebuilding is that the tractor can't be used unless you get a temporary alternator just to keep the fan belt on. I need to finish some hay fields and then I think I can take it off for a few days while waiting on getting rebuilt. I think you are into hay season as well. To keep the tractor running, you might try getting a DN alternator and then rebuild the old one then make the new one a spare. Obviously with an air conditioner and cab, you need an alternator pretty quickly if it isn't working.

one option would be to buy a SPARE DN without the tach drive and install it and use while you get your OLD UNIT rebuilt... That way, no down time.

Thanks to all we are not into hay season yet we could be any day though off , my old alternator works fine. I just wanted a back up. Apparently the back up will fit the 200 , and my XT and I have several 185s also. Thanks! Dana

I know you would probably like to have the tach working all the time, but in an emergency just put one on without the drive. You can also just use a one wire temporary just hook up the red wire is all. Then when yours is fixed put it back together right again.

or go to a ONE wire with the tach .... eliminate the old voltage regulator.. it has a possibility to fail also..

Just get yours rebuilt when the tractor has a couple of weeks of down time - like winter time. IF you suspect it is failing already, park the tractor close to a battery charger until it can get rebuilt. |

Personally I like the external regulated alternators, seems to make them less acceptable to heat stress. but that's just my opinion cuzz most things fail eventually. If the regulator fails inside the alternator, and it is taken apart to replace the vr, then you can see / test the rest of the alternator too and service that at the same time to last another X amount of time.

The 100 series tractors & 200 came with Delco 10 DN alternators, no cab 32Amp, Cab 55Amp, rotor drilled/tapped for tach drive.
I had a local rebuilder that if 32A alternator failed made them over to 60 amp by installing higher capacity stator as I was running extra electrical. After starting in cold weather they peg the 60 A ammeters for a couple minutes. Most electrical rebuilders should be able to do this if requested.

Ok I have the DB electrical 63 amp with tach drive on the way here. Believe advertised as a 1 wire. Don’t laugh at me but how do I wire this?

ONe wire is just the BIG LUG and connected to the BATTERY terminal . ( or the HOT lug on the starter solenoid).. Same as a 3 wire, but you dont have the two spade terminals.
Captain... one curious question... On the present alternator, why is there only one wire on the two spade connector ? Looks like wire has been modified.... Guess its still working that way !! Edited by steve(ill) - 24 May 2023 at 8:59am |

Ok guys n gals (?) when I got home from mowing 35 acres yesterday I found not one but two identical boxes from DB electrical each containing the one wire 65 amp tach driving alternators. Musta had fat fingers when ordering😱. So now when ever the need arises I’ll have to figure what to do with all them wires on my other in use alt! Guess cap them all off ‘cept the one to my batts? Be safe y’all. Dana
