Hello Gentlemen,
My neighbor has a 160 he wants to sell, says it runs, but hasn't in awhile, as the rubber lines between the injectors are leaking. Are these still available? Are the fenders the same as on a 170? What are some good and bad points of a 160? It's a black stripe, if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! It certainly could be that too, but he said it was a fuel leak. He's had it for several years, but hasn't used it, just moved around from shed to shed. I don't know a lot about them, and there aren't many around here, that's why I asked on here,

Two versions of the tractor. One-Sixtey and 160 labels but both are listed on the parts website as 160. Hydraulic system can be a problem. One version of the tractor has a filter with plastic elements. The other version has a cartridge filter. The plastic elements can collapse and cause problems. Additional inlet filter located towards rear of transmission. Steering systems are different - one basically all hydraulic with an orbital motor system and the other has steering linkage.
Tractors are great workhorses for the size. Parts may be hard to find and pricey. Only like 4500 were imported. |

I have a 160 which is the updated version. Better hydraulic system and updated filter canister. It’s a good 40 hp tractor, great for raking, pulling wagons, running a square baler. Perkins is a fuel sipper, has good power, and is reliable. Mine has 7500 hours on it and I just did a complete out of frame rebuild on the engine and rebuilt both clutches. I’ve been very pleased with mine. Keeping filters changed and fluids clean is important especially in the hydraulic system. They have great brakes, foot throttle, and differential lock. They will start very well in cold weather. I never had to use the intake heater last winter. Best starting diesel I’ve ever owned. I could keep rambling on lol.
As said above the rubber lines are returns and that would be a easy fix. Give it a look over and report back what you find and what questions you have. Edited by AC720Man - 11 Oct 2022 at 9:08pm |

As far as the fenders, those and the hood were borrowed from 170 tractor. The black stripe would indicate it’s a 160.

Thanks AcFordHawk and 720man. He said this one doesn't have the high-low transmission, so it only has the main engine clutch? Just asking, as you said you redid both clutches on yours. How do I tell which filter system it has, or is it the updated system because it is a 160? I don't think it has power steering, but could be wrong, as the worm gear in the box under the fuel tank has been replaced, as it couldn't be steered with the steering wheel. It has good 12.4.x.28 rear tires, are there other size options, or can wheels/rims from a wd fit? It needs one axle seal, perhaps both, are these available? Again thanks to all who've replied, I'll go look it over again, and will probably have more questions before I fully decide on buying it,

It also appears to not have the correct radiator, it looks way to small, and is sitting on a piece of square tubing. If this isn't correct, I'm guessing a replacement is tough to get without having one built?

You have the basic model if it doesn’t have hi/low. Most likely non adjustable front end and no spin out rims. The hydraulic filter is located on the right front directly behind the radiator. Metal canister about a foot tall. Sandy Lake IMP in Pa had a parts tractor about a year ago.

Lack of a hi-low and manual steering makes it the basic version. I'm guessing the front wheels are 4-bolt rather than 6 also. The intermediate and standard versions have the hi-low range transmission, power steering, six-lug hubs on the front, and a different front axle. The clutch is a 2-stage arrangement. Let the foot clutch out half-way and the PTO gets power. The wheels get power as you release the clutch the rest of the way. Hope this helps.

Thanks again 720Man and Flyer. It doesn't have p.s. wheels, if i remember right it does have 4 bolt front rims. I'll have to look for the hydraulic filter again. It's actually quite straight, but faded as it came from TX. Perhaps we'll have to get it running again so I can try things out. Any info on the radiator?

If you need a radiator check with Sandy Lake, that tractor had a good radiator but not sure if it’s still available. The 2 clutches I replaced was the main clutch and the pto clutch while I had the tractor split in half.

So I went back to take another look this afternoon, it appears to be the basic model, no diff lock, power steering, hydraulic outlets in the back, no high/low. It has 4 bolt hubs, 6 speed transmission, and the small filter canister on the right side of the radiator. We did get it running but seems to have a miss. Also smokes a lot, the rockshaft doesn't operate, and it only went into gears 5 and 6 easily at first, but we were able to get it into the others the more we played around with it, although it ground some. Perhaps it just needs to be run some more and worked, as it has been sitting quite awhile. I looked at another one that is fairly close by first, so I could compare features between the two before I went back to this one. Is the basic version the rarer of these tractors? The first one I looked at today had all the bells and whistles, and probably a lot more useful, but isn't for sale.

The entire 160 series itself are getting to be rare, with slightly less than 5,600 built from 1970-1975 there are probably not that many good ones left. I have never seen a basic One-Sixty, 160. I would say that far fewer of them were built simply because of the need of the extra features required by farmers. Having a hi/low transmission, rear remotes, spin out wheels, adjustable front end to name a few are important features farmers needed.
As far as the 3point, depending on the year it was built, there are filters in the hydraulic system that may need to be cleaned, fluid level needs to be full, system free of air or the system will not work. I had that issue after I did the rebuild. Air in the system prevented it from working at all. On my 160, I simply placed a hydraulic fitting in a hydraulic outlet with a short hose on it to reach into a 5 gal bucket. Operate the hydraulic lever back and forth until a solid stream of oil shoots into the bucket. Move to the next outlet and repeat. As long as your system has no leaks and isn’t sucking air anywhere the lift arms should now operate. Since the one that you are looking at has no remotes check the suction tube for bad seals or gaskets. There is a rubber coupling on the suction tube near where the tractor would be split that needs to be checked for cracks or the clamps not tightened down. It would be a good idea to replace it due to its age. That is a common place for it to suck air. It would be a good idea to clean the fuel tank if it’s been sitting for a long period of time and replace the fuel filter. It is smoking for a reason, they are a clean running tractor. Could be a number of things causing it. Edited by AC720Man - 12 Oct 2022 at 10:51pm |

Thanks again AC720man for your replies and info! The oil has been recently changed and so has the fuel filter, and the tank looked good from what I could see in the filler neck, but an entire fuel system cleaning certainly couldn't hurt, and hydraulic oil services too. This tractor also has a swinging drawbar and underslung exhaust. Checking the prices for 160's on tractorhouse was a little surprising, although the prices on there are rather inflated to start with.

As far as when it was built, I didn't see any serial number info in Norm's book. This serial number starts with 075.

AC was terrible at record keeping and this model is one of the worst. Most likely because it was foreign built even though AC had a lot of input into what they wanted. I haven’t found any serial number information during my research. Only model I am aware of with no records. A shame really, the owners that I have spoken to have been very pleased with their tractors. A fella that lives not far from me bought their One-Sixty new and said it has been a very reliable tractor. They just did a new paint job last year. It has mainly ran their mower, square baler, and rake. Parts are hard to come by, but so far I haven’t had that issue even when I did a full engine rebuild including a new oil pump and cam. I’m sure that’s because its a Perkins and that engine was used in many agriculture applications including the 235 Massey Ferguson tractor.
They do fetch good money especially the nice ones. But, a person can put any price on one, doesn’t mean he will get that for it. Edited by AC720Man - 13 Oct 2022 at 9:33pm |

There is another filter/screen to the right of the seat. 4 bolts hold it in place. Be careful removing this as it is one of the parts that I think is NLA. Clean it carefully, if its dirty, it is a source of hydraulic issues. It really does a good job of catching debris. The screen is plastic so just be gentle with it.

Thanks again AC720man, and thanks steve(ill) for the link to that post. Still trying to decide what to do about it, I don't need another project or tractor to find room for, but it is a unique addition to the fleet, although not practical,
