    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 at 6:14pm
I've been working with a flooring contractor that has multiple projects on commercial buildings. Hard hats are required before entry on these projects and my contractor loaned me one. My question is , WHAT IN THE HELL will these gallon milk jugs protect a person from OuchSleepy ??

Just put the hard hat on, and leave it on anytime you are on the job site. Depending on the other trades working around you, someday you will glad you have that on your noggin.

Personal Protective Equipment or PPE consisting of steel or composite toed shoes, safety glasses and hard hat is a OSHA requirement on most job sites. HI VIZ clothing is also being enforced along with hearing protection. I have had many hours of PPE training working for MDOT and The Andersons Plant Nutrient Group. Some jobs such as handling Anhydrous Ammonia is in a person's best interest to pay attention during training!

Tell your buddy to smack you up the side of the head with a hammer and see how it helps !!  Wink

Steve,I have seen men smack each other on the Hard Hat with a hammer to prove they work! Safety man at MDOT would check the hard hats for cracks or breaks. If he found one he took the power saw and cut it in two and told the wearer to get a new one! This is the same guy cutting trees in a bucket truck that cut a limb too long and it fell and hit the deck of the truck smashing a brand new chain saw! He actually wasn't safe to be around but got the Safety man position because nobody else wanted it and he had seniority!

People think because a W Section is going to kill you anyway, what's the point.  Well, let me drop a bolt on your head from 30 feet up, and see how it feels.  They provide a LOT of protection!  Can even prevent you being snagged by a stray fish hook.

One definite thing that wearing a hard hat will help protect you from is, not getting kicked off the job site because ding dongs like you.

Have a 30 foot tape measure fall off a 10 foot step ladder on your head and it will change your mind . Seen an electrician leave a cordless drill on a tall step ladder with a 1/4 " bit in it . Someone on the jobsite bumped it and the drill landed with the bit pointing down stuck 2 inches in the subfloor. Usually don't wear mine unless some overhead work is going on but one can never be too careful

Hud and Phil you got me on memory lane with that style hat.Friend, neighbor, mentor, landlord, always wore one of that style. I believe his was made of fiberglass as he was also the telephone lineman for the old local phone company, before Ma Bell bought it all up.

He took a bit kidding but always kept with it saying how many bumps on the head it saved him.

The day we laid him to rest one neighbor came up with a new yellow hard hat for all the pallbearers  to wear. Very fitting for a kind generous gentleman.

So Freeguy even if your head has nothing needing protection, just do it to safe the boss man headaches that only the hat on your head can save him from. Been several times I sure wished my cowboy hat had been one those hard hats ones.

Well I don’t know how the rules apply to metal lids. But the materials used now do age and become less effective according to OSHA or the manufacturer

Metal lids can still be used in Forrestry and Oil Field to my knowledge. They are gradually becoming replaced by composite and plastic.OSHA mandates no aluminum hard hat where electrical distribution for a known reason! Then you never know when somebody turns into a crispy critter!
