Picked this 1951 WD up this evening. New tires on rear, well they were 25 years ago...but have no dry rot. Which is also the last time she was run. Tank is dry, water in the radiator. Engine is free. Has rear wheel weights and unfortunately both rears are loaded. Right side has some rust around the valve stem, not sure how bad until I get the wheel off. It also sprung a leak at the stem as we was dragging it on the trailer and spewed CC on me and the trailer. Nasty stuff. Winter project that I probably didn’t need. Just hoping to get her running and hoping not to put to much into it. Was most likely heading to scrap yard and didn’t want to see that happen.

It came with the loader lift arms, mounts, hydraulic tank. I am removing those items if anyone is interested in them.

LOTS of caked on grease/oil and dust.  Doesn't look too bad.  That'll keep you out of mischief.

Very straight WD. I'd keep the hydraulic components. You may want to use them down the road.

Other than the slight dent in the tank, the sheet metal is great.
I'd clean it, and use it as is.

That’s my plan, get it running, clean it up, fix the right side rear wheel, fix some leaks, and rake hay with it. Old decals faded and the owner put those rectangle decals on it. Hoping they will come off with a heat gun. So with a fuel tank dry and clean, should I try starting it without pulling the carb first? If I take it apart that means a rebuild. I’m kinda feeling lucky. Definitely draining the oil and putting a filter on before I try to start it along with some new plugs. What plugs work best in these?

Carb shouldn't need a rebuild unless it is full of gunk. Probably come apart just fine.
I have a 45 carb you can use to test the motor out

Looks just like the stuff I drag home, only better! Looks complete and ready to rake hay next summer with a tune up. Glad you saved it!

Finally got to work on it a little bit monday. Picked up a new battery, new plugs, oil and filter. Unhooked the fuel line and poured some fuel in the tank. Allowed the fuel to flow in to a clear container. Not too much sediment flowed thru which made me happy. Repeated the process several times until no more sediment came thru. Of course the sediment bowl leaked, but as the cork soaked up some fuel it became less and less. Against my better judgement, I wanted to see if she would fire. After about 10 seconds of turning over she barked but failed to start. Fuel began coming out the throat of the carb. I knew then that the float was stuck and it would have to be cleaned. So that’s where I am at, carb is in the cleaner, and hopefully I can finish cleaning it tomorrow and start putting it back together. More to come...

AC720Man,
If it tried to start it will run. Good job! Yea I always want to see if they will run too. Seems to justify us bringing them home! I did bring one home that was stuck and it took another engine to get that WD rolling.
Your tractor looks good. I like it!

Chris

AC720Man,
Just a thought. (ok I am a wannabee body man) With the right curved 'pick' you might be able to gently work that dent out of the tank through the filler neck. Rest of the sheet metal looks pretty darn good for a non restored WD. A lot of them have such banged up, and rusted out, sheet metal due to a life of hard knocks. Dont ask me how I know!

 Chris

Chris, I was thinking the same thing about the tank but unsure of what tool to try without putting small dents outward trying to get the dent out. We had a sleet/freezing rain event today so not sure when I will get back to working on it. She is still outside due to the leaking CC rear wheel fluid. Really want to get the carb back together and see if she will run.

I really hate that its outside as it was always stored under a slant roof building. Open to the sunlight but out of the rain.

By the way, the mount on the front end is not a weight bracket, it was a mount for a post driver that I really wish they still had. Just in case anyone was wondering. I need to build some fence and could have really used it.

I was thinking puller weight bracket too. Post driver would have been nice tool.
I have two setting out under 6 inches of snow, dont like that either!
Maybe a curved tool with a flat face might pull that dent?
Those rear rims are always a fun job. After doing a couple myself, there is no shortcuts or easy ways. I have the tire removed, sand blast the rim, and begin the repairs around the hole or rust areas. Most of the time you will need a donor rim for pieces. although I did a pair with small formed steel shapes.

 Chris

The mount has a 3” pipe between the frame. I’m guessing it hinged on it. Not sure what brand it would have been. Wish I had it, the WD is already set up for it. Hydraulic tank and hose is still on it. Anyone have any idea of the brand, model number it may have been? I would like to find one.

Happy to report the ole gal runs. Doesn’t smoke at all which shocked me. Got a few things to do before she is earning her keep. Water pump leaks, will need a new one. Fuel shut off, bowl continues to leak after new gasket. Will replace. Repair the rear wheel and install new tube. Other wise very happy. Happy Thanksgiving!

I was lucky since it was stored under a shed. That helped prevent damage from the elements even though it was an open building in the front. Hoping in the next few weeks to have the repairs done and have a moving tractor. Would like to have a hay ride with family at Christmas

A little update. Cleaned the carb, came out really well. Put a partial Zenith kit in it because it didn’t appear to be to worn. Mistake on my part. Need to get a complete Zenith kit for a 10981A carb. She starts up on partial choke now, no tuning of the mixture screw helps much. Good friend was hoping to have a Marval carb for me but came up empty. Can I buy a new carb? Of course I can, but that defeats the whole reason I was willing to save this WD from the chopping block...cost. Don’t want to put more in it than its worth. Good news is, water pump is working well and doesn’t leak as I had thought. She runs smooth and smoke free on partial choke. So, a new complete kit will be ordered tonight. Still happy at this point with the ole girl, found out this evening the last time she was run. April 4th, 2004. Oil change, new rear tires and she was parked shortly there after. Thankfully fuel had been drained.

Considering it's age that is not a bad looking WD.
Brings back memories of when we delivered our first WD in 1948.  As we were putting it in gear to drive off the truck the engine died.  Embarrassingly we were out of gas - never happened to me again.
Delighted to hear that you not only saved this unit and are getting it running again.  The fact that you got it running easily shows again that, Allis Chalmers made them good.  Take good care of another Allis Chalmers Icon.  Also good to hear that it is not too far away.
Good Luck!

Great news, Charlie my brother came by this morning to help me diagnose my WD. It will run smooth but only on partial choke. Younger eyes saw where one of the carb studs was hitting the lip of the manifold on the left side. As you may know there is not much room there. Although it appeared the carb was flush with the gasket, it wasn’t snug. After removing the carb again, an apparent backfire blew out the rear of a brand new gasket. I took my 4” grinder and widened the slot to allow a little more room. Previous owner at some point had removed the carb and put the studs in upside down. Long side up which did not allow enough clearance. Bought 2 new studs, a new gasket. New gasket was also thicker than the one I had got in a rebuild kit. Put it back together, pulled out the choke and she fired right up. Let off the choke, Smooth idle, smooth throughout the full range of throttle. Governor working as it should. Hard to believe that it was sucking that much air to cause such an issue. Very pleased at how its running now. Thanks Charlie for finding my issue. Thinner gasket from the rebuild kit caused a clearance issue due to the studs being installed upside down from the previous owner. Cheap fix.
