 Topic: D14 Running funny

Been working on one of my D14s and it is running funny. It will idle or run wide open not really a middle range. I have taken the governor out to inspect it. Looks brand new or hardly used. Timed correctly and the carb has been cleaned twice. Anyone have this issue before?

Did the 'funny' looking spring from the carb linkage to manifold fall off ??
It's called the 'anti-surge' spring, I think....

Anti surge spring would not cause this problem. It sounds more like the governor weights. Also wouldn't hurt to check the linkage for binding or wallowed holes.

If I remember right, with the tractor shut off, you open the carb throttle full open, then open the governor wide open and the throttle rod should be about 1/8th of an inch shy of fitting in the hole of the carb. You can bent the rod to get that match.

From rhe way I see the photos, the rod may be a little short. Can you take some of the bend out of the rod to get it within an 1/8" from fitting in the hole?

Bend the governor rod toward the carb more? I can but then that rod will hit the front of the block/head I'm pretty sure because when the throttle is at idle it's almost touching as is. (See first picture of throttle all the way down)

Don't try and bend the governor arm that crosses in the front of the block UNLESS you absolutely have to. Too much of a chance of damaging something else if you aren't an expert on this. Your link rod (governor arm to carb rod) is too short. Remove it and straighten out some of the bends and see if you can't get it to proper length to just slide back into the holes. VERIFY THE LINK ROD DOESN'T RUB AGAINST ANYTHING WHEN DONE. If it doesn't idle down fully after this adjustment, correct that by changing the throttle rod length under the gas tank.

Thanks for the help boys. That's what it was. I have been playing with the linkages and kept tweaking it a little here and there she kept getting better and better. She runs like a top now. I can tell she does need to be worked some. This engine hasn't really ran in years. Think some plow time is in this tractor's future.
