 Topic: New project D17 propane

A buddy of mine and I made a road trip to Edwardsville IL last Sunday to pick up this old tractor. It turns out it is a 1958 Allis Chalmers D17 factory propane. It needs a few assorted parts (engine, flywheel, all the propane parts and little odds and ends). Has a neat set of steel wheels as well. I'll be removing them though. Here are a few pics. It may be a little while before I get to this one, but I'll get it back together. Adam

There's a salvage yard, not far from me. That has 3 d17s to pull parts off of. No propane models though.you Could get some better sheet metal maybe. I didn't think about the fact that a gleaner engine will be different flywheel that what you need. If you go that route and need one I will have it here. Also the governor, I think gleaners have a belt drive governor

I think the belt driven governors were used on the Chevy engines. The Allis-manufactured engines used gear driven governors similar to the tractor governors.

You will want to search ebay for the high octane engine kit if you want to build a 226 propane engine for that. It has the regulator gas tank as well so I am not sure what would have made it a factory propane looks like my serries 1 gas with the motor out right now. Honestly if it was mine I would look for a more modern diesel that would fit. I have looked into a few different diesel options. Or I would get a 226 gas and put it together as a gas those are great tractors with the gas motor. But I so wish I found a project one without a motor so I could build a fuel efficient diesel tractor out of it. That is my dream project I love my d17 just wish I had one that burned less money haying all summer. It is too bad that a 180 or 175 are not easy to find around here.
Good luck however you decide to go it will be a great build.

It has the matching propane side hood sheets. Someone at one time had converted it to gasoline. I actually forgot to mention that I bought it from dmpaul89. Thanks to him again and it was good talking with you.

I know you want to go back original so I'm not commenting about that, but I did notice what a fine set of fenders you have there, so I imagine the rest of what's left hasn't been abused.

I am wondering what type of steal wheels are hiding under the rubber. Could they be some thing that came out of a factory on an older tractor and where moved to the d17 or are they totally home made? They look like a interesting puzzle to me.

Dan73, those rims the irons are welded to have had tires on them before... you can see where the tire irons bent the rim edges... On the fenders, I got one tractor that I simply cut a taller sheet to bolt up higher and that sure stopped it from floppin around. Sandknob, good luck on bringing the old girl back to life as an LP gas tractor... I would like to find one that is in decent shape, was a day late on one that the new owner was going to convert it to gas because of the higher compression. and had plans for the tank for something else. And another sweetie would be a 190XT on propane... and fellow down the road had no luck at all starting it in the winter, engine heater and salamander heater to get it started. Finally he put a diesel in it just because he wouldn't shut off the liquid valve and let her run till it died and then shut the switch off. Man, that XT on propane was so smooth, almost like it was silk.

I looked closer at them tonight and they are two narrow rims put together and then had the spokes welded to the power adjust rims. Interesting way to do it.

I love my D-17 Propane! It is pretty much the only smaller tractor that sees regular use anymore. not only is the fuel cheap, but it is easy on fuel. and no matter how long it sits it will start. Don't have to worry about carb, bad gas issues.
