Recently purchased a 190xt. It currently has a1000 rpm pto. How big of a project is it to switch to a 540. I believe it is a 67.

I didn't realize that they came with a 1000 RPM only PTO. I've only ever seen 540 or the interchangeable one. Learn something new every day.

That could be the case. I have never seen an interchangeable pto on a 190. I am definitely not an expert on the matter. This is the first tractor that I have owned.

I don't know what is involved but in 1971 I was going to buy a new xt, it had 540 and I needed 1000, dealer said he would change it for me but that is as much as I know.

Be careful with that. Extending the PTO changes the standard for length, which is necessary for range of motion. You can get into trouble running out of collapse in the shaft. I was trying to back a little red wagon with 400 bushel of corn into a shed once. The PTO shaft evidently ran out of room to collapse(nose of tractor was a little up hill from drawbar). When I cranked the front end a little and kicker the brake to straighten things out I heard a BANG. It was the PTO shaft shearing off the tractor. |

To Change you need to change 2 gears and the shaft. The early and later 190's used differant gears.
Another option is to put a 2 speed lift housing on. It used the 1000 rpm gears.

Thanks for the info. Where would be the best place to find the parts for this swap? Is the agco dealer the best place to go?

Are you sure that it is not the inner changeable 540/1000 PTO? Darrel

I don't know if it's interchangeable or not. This one looks to be bolted on. I'll take a picture next time I have a chance.

I bet if you unbolt it, you'll find the shaft you need inside. only use 4 bolts at any time, and all four in the same radius of the flange. 540 uses one bolt circle and 1000 uses the other. 190 experts will need to chime in. karl f

I have a two speed housing and all the parts from a 185 for sale....I would think that they would fit. If your pto flange has 4 extra holes all you have to do is flip it and use those holes.

The 2 speed has stub shaft bolted on with 4 bolts to a hub. The standard does not have a hub and goes directly through the bearing which has a 3 bolt flange retainer.
The best place for the parts is from an individual or a tractor salvage yard. You can buy another tractor for what the dealer will charge.

My Dad ordered a n XT190 from the factory with full time 1000 pto . We ran a John Deere 300 corn picker with it. It had the hyd. clutch engage. Years later I put the 2 speed housing on it for 540 pto instead of changing gears up front. The housing was from a 185, but I think the shaft in front of the housing needed to come from a 190 or maybe a 200. I got the parts from North side Salvage in Red Bud IL.

I took a closer look yesterday. It is a full time 1000 rpm pto. Looked through the manual, hope to be able to switch it out myself. All of the implements that I will be running are 540. Thanks again for the info. Alex.
