OK, Mr ,,,,mr,,,, well OK,,,I'll tell you my story since I do tend to NOT have much to say,Wink  Actually,,I DID write a long winded tale about my Great Stroke of luck on this machine, but for some reason, my story did not post only the 3 pics,,,,???
Anyway, this was on The Marketplace as an "Old Drill Press? But my sharp eyes told me that it was much more than an "Old Drill Press" seeing that nice machinist vise and that 2 axis  base for the vise,,,,Contacted the people and first price was $300 and she said someone had told her that was a good price but would take "offers" She did not know nuttin about it and did not know if main motor worked. I offered her a "fair Price" with so many unknowns,,,, and she said "Come and get it"! Since she lived in Carlsbad  about 40 miles away, I got my Bro and went to go look. Between me, my bro and her boy friend it took over an hour to manhandle it outside of her house and in my trk.
I will say this,,the old fellar that built this is a 100%  Craftsman and an expert Machinist. The head he used for the drill is a Heavy Duty unit and sits on an EXTRA LONG 4" column of about 6 foot long,,,?? It is bolted to a table he made of 1/2" plate along with the Extra Heavy machinist vise and the 2 axis base which EACH weigh over 75#,,,!!He had been using it as a mill and drill.
Anyway, in the last pic, you can barely see the two red wires coming from the winch that is under the vise table. The cable/ pulley system is a work of art that he built and centers itself on a machined 1 1/4" rod that extends the full length of the machine. The winch power wires had been disconnected so I have not tested it but winch looks new??
I'm just curious WHY the column is SOOO dang long as from floor to top of machine is 9 feet long,,,!!!

Hey Steve, that's what the winch is for, altho it seems like the long way around,,,,? But since the column does not have the gears on it to raise and lower the head, ,the owner was left with having to build a means to do so. I have to take off all the extra removable weight to maneuver it into the spot I plan to put it ,,,but I ain't going to remove the head from column as it is a heavy sob,,,,,

You could also use a very small boat winch and hand crank the head up and down to simplify it.... I have a milling machine, and dont move the head very often.. When you do, its normally only a few inches... never over a foot.

By the Casting beneath the Drill Head on the pipe, appears took a Floor Model Drill Press and added the stand for more Depth of use.  Maybe the old Press Foot was busted, good way to recover.

Not hard to understand why disconnected winch, NOT Slow feed and once running do not Immediately Stop.  Hand Boat winch a Better Choice.

A good friend of mine had a milling machine like that. II think it could sit on a frame like that or on a work bench. I think that the head was raised and lowered by a hand crank. He was a retired machinist from Greyhound Bus Lines and set up a complete metal fabricating shop in his garage and could fabricate just about anything. Unfortunately he passed away from cancer at a much too young of age.

You got a good deal there. Just an FYI...... If that particular HF winch has the wireless remote the wires from the control box to the motor will corrode under the insulation and not pass any current making you think that you have a bad control (don't ask me how I know).

For light work it will do many jobs but the drill press quill and extend reach of the chuck will thave a tendency to walk if to much load is put on it while using as a mill .
If you are milling - do not try to hog material with a endmill or you will find the accuracy is way off . Check your runout on the spindle as well as the chuck .
Life lesson: If you’re being chased by a lion, you’re on a horse, to the left of you is a giraffe and on the right is a unicorn, what do you do? You stop drinking and get off the carousel.

Yep, Steve,,, your pic is the exact milling work table thats on this one. The tag on the machinist vise is not legible and it also weighs a ton,,! I have graet respect for quality work done by a skilled machinist,,!! You can tell he built this to last him a lifetime,,,alas,,he did pass according to the owner of the house.
Dave also got it right as the tag on the drill head says it started out as a floor model. The rest of tag says it is a 16 speed and lots of other numbers but no name brand that is legible.
What is puzzling is WHY did he build such a LONG shaft above the drill head? The btm shaft below the drill head is a 4 bolt flange and is 16" long and is tapered from 4" to 3" where it is slides together and allen headed together with the top piece which is 3" all the way to top and that piece is 48" long,,,?
I'm kinda like ole Steve and Dave to use a boat type winch as the electric winches never stop where you want em to,,,,!  I'm also wondering on exactly HOW LONG the upper column really has to be,,,??

The big floor model drill press I got in the garage has a stationary head and the work table moves to the position you want by use of a hand crank on the column . Sure wish this one was that way.
I also want to swap the chucks on the two drill press,,they both use the  JT3 chuck but the one in garage has a 3-16 MM and this one is 3-12MM. How are these locked onto the drill head?

You dang sure got a point there Hubert,,, I looked at the wiring on the winch and the wires to/from the winch go into a small box mounted on frame next to an RV type 30 amp  Converter. There are NO on/Off switch anywhere so it must be a remote controlled winch,,,,BUT,,I did not get the remote,,,!!!  RATZ,,,!! There is aslo an elaborate lubrication system the PO installed with a small reservoir and a circulating 12 volt pump also hooked up to the converter. NICE set up,,,,

Joe, JT is Jacobs Taper.( on the chuck)..... The DRILL HEAD is MORSE TAPER..(MT 2 or 3)..If you pull the feed handle down a few inches, you should see an oblong hole in the head shaft above the chuck... You drive a taper wedge in that hole and the chuck and taper shaft pop out... Best to leave them as a unit and switch to the other drill press if it has the same taper shaft...

Now to get the JT taper chuck off the shaft, you have to  PUSH from the inside of the chuck..... like where you installed the LEFT HAND THREAD SCREW on the smaller hand drill chucks..

Well Joe, I hate to see a buddy like you take in the shorts so badly on a deal like that. So being a good friend, I'll help you cut your losses and get out from under it. I'll give you at least half of what you paid for it, you can ship it up to me, and you won't be so bad off. And I might even talk ole shameless into not sending you as much Purdy as he originally intended for you. Deal?????

I really don't think that shameless uses sites, coordinates, or any of that high tech stuff. Think he just kind of shoots from the hip, points the spout in any random direction. Has no tachometer on it, so doesn't know if he's sending it a mile or a thousand miles. Yeah, it's kind of basic... basically a nightmare!

Well,,a bit of an update on the mill, drill.
I took off everything off the main frame for a good clean up and paint job,,,still trying to convince ole Dave Miller to come do a "shooting Match" on it, since he so good at that,,,,,Wink
This baby is gonna get a "Shameless Specia Rattle Can Jobl",,,,LOLLOL
I about decided to move that big floor model drill out and this one in it's place,,,,don't need two drill presses,,,,, Finally got the chuck out and checked runout on my lathe and is is .000000000000000.3,,,,, I'ld say it pretty "tight",,,,,Wink
I'm still puzzled at the reason for extra long column length,,,?????

Well, STEVE, since the drill head shaft does not have the "cogs" or "gears"to raise or lower the drill head,,,he HAD to fashion this elaborate means of raising and lowering the head via the cable/winch method. ,,,,??
Hey Dave, the tag does say "Floor Model" but with the head shaft NOT having the "cogs" on it,,,how did they raise or lower the drill head without rigging the wince/cable method,,,?
CHIT, makin my head hurt trying to figure this out,,,,LOL

If it was a drill press, then normally the TABLE moves up and down.. Some you lift and clamp manually, and some have the gear/ crank on them... On MILLING MACHINES it is more common for the table to remain fixed and the HEAD go up and down.

Im not sure the "tooth  shaft" on the drill press is even screwed to the 4 inch post.. Many i have seen have a ring at the top and bottom to HOLD the gear tooth shaft in place, and the table holds it at the center... with the crank to raise and lower.

Well,, I been doing some measuring on both  machines and lo & behold,,the big floor model in the garage is a much bigger machinw,,!! The machine in garage is
 Column OD = 3.150"
 Head Stroke = 3.250
 Head Shaft OD = 1.850
 Head Size = 12"L, 6.750" H, 3.000 W.
 Chuck = CF JT3 CAP 16MM
Hand crank to lift table

Machine (new)
 Column OD = 2.860
 Head Stroke 4.000
 Head Shaft OD, =1.580
 Head size = 11.500 L, 5" W, 2.750 W
Chuck   JT3 W/Morse taper shaft  CAP 3-16 MM
Designed to lift Drill Head with electric winch

 What to do,,,what to do,,??

Wanting the best of both worlds, I could just transfer the Vevor compound milling table and it's vise to the big drill in the garage. I would have to get a heaver Duty table 1/2" plate) as the round table is now only 12" dia. Only'ist thing,  like ole Steve says, most mills move the head up & Down where drill press move the table up & Down. I DO like the hand crank on column for the table in garage, tho,,,,,,,

Joe, i think a lot depends on what your going to do with them.. My Milling machine i got after Dad died 30 years ago... Its a decent size Chinese unit from about 1970 era.. I have used it a couple times per year since then...

My drill press is a 15 inch Craftsman that i bought in 1980. Floor model.... I use it about 5 times per week ... They really dont do the same job.. If you have room for BOTH, i would do that... Mill is NICE, but drill press is a NECESSITY.

I think for a Milling Machine you want a BIG STABLE TABLE.. anchored in all 4 corners.. Not one that slides up and down on a post.... Milling tools put a heck of a SIDE LOAD on the part while fly cutting.
