The Pontoon boat we used to have was a 24' model with a 115 HP mercury and would flat move out on the water. BUT,,,we got caught on the water one time with one of those fast moving storms and the ONE thing that made it so friggin dangerous was the top,!! That sob was tossing and turnin like a beached whale because of all that top heavy mass up so high,!!,,,,Even tho it was made of 1"aluminum square tubing and aluminum sheet, it was at least 8' high and caught a heck of a lot of wind. It got so bad I finally got everybody (11 people) to sit or lay on floor and we let the top down and lashed it down, AND the boat became quite a bit more stable, so I was able to haul azz and get back to shore. You can see the video of  the duck boat doing the same thing before going under. Gosh,,,I can imagine how very terrifying it must of been for them poor people,,,May God Bless all of them.

when they made them, they didn't have roofs, then when they started using them for the tourists all over, they added the tops to keep the sun off the people, then some places like this one, they added plexiglass windows...both to keep little kids from falling out and to keep water from splashing in. if the plexiglass wasn't there, most all would have prolly survived. there is a place...don't remember where anymore...that all they do is restore/refurbish/repower them duks (duks) that's all they do. so there must be a ton of them out there yet. prolly could google them to see.

yep...they are housed in metal mesh compartments above in the middle. even the small amount of time that boat was bobbing in the water before going down, there was enough time to get them out.

The one we were in was newly refurbished and painted Army green. In the water it was slow maybe 10 to 15 mph but not sure if he was running it at full speed. The side curtains were not used the day we rode it but it did go through my mind about being able to get out if needed.
