So I have been getting behind on my projects, like many of us seem to do. I bought this D-17 Diesel a year or two ago and have had time to do nothing to it. The engine is seized and I have not investigated to see why. I put some oil in all the cylinders right after it came home hoping it would start working it loose. I never really tried to free it up I just left it as I have other projects to work on. So hear is my dilema, I really wanted to restore this tractor and use it, but I think a more modern machine would be better. So I am thinking maybe it needs a new home. My second thought was maybe I could pull the engine out and sell it and then repower it with a ford 302 I have laying around. The tractor is pretty straight and mostly complete but I guess I wanted to know what you guys think. Thanks in advance for any opinions, Denis

Well they are an awesome tractor when in working order. One of my all time favorite tractors by far with such a smooth running diesel. On the otherhand it would most likely cost a fair amount to get it going again depending on engine condition. May be best to determine engine conditions and go from there depending on what you are willing to spend. Good luck. Most of it looks to be pretty straight.

In case it makes a difference in your opinion, the left rear is about 70% tread and that rim is perfect, the right rear how ever has a pretty bad tire and the rim is getting rusty it also has the grille and left fender. It had a 3 point but I removed that and put it on one of my WD45s. It is fairly complete and has all the tin hood badges. Thanks, Denis

im rebuilding my D19 diesel right now, thought everything would be a simple fix but it wasnt over $5500 later i will have a nice tractor that still needs paint. Im not complaining one bit about it as I know whats in it now.

You have to be able to finance the "project" with all your heart, if it AC it's a no brainer. Look at some of the dedicated AC Forum folks who have done there machines over, they stand back and feel great. I wished I was able to finance some past projects to the end, times just didn't allow it. ACscott, thanks for your dedication to the cause, keeping the Orange Machines doing what there suppose to do.

I've got a D17d that I put a set of rings and bearings in it. The expence wasn't all that bad compared to the value of the tractor. The old girl runs good and the two speed had clutch makes for a handy tractor. First priority is, as others have said is an evaluation of that stuck motor. My favorite trick is PB Blaster in all pistons, two cans, one third in each cylinder should do it. With the tractor in nuetral, engage the pto, put a wrench on the shaft at the 10 or 2 oclock position and hang a 100lb suitcase weight on the end of the wrench. The next morning put her in fourth and rock it for about five minutes, put the wrench back on the other side this time and repeat that night after work. If in four or five days it doesn't free up, then you probly in for a total rebuild, sleeves, pistons and all. Please don't cut up a clasic like that there are pleanty of old bones for that. Well since in some areas a running diesel in that shape sells for around $1500, you don't have a lot to play with. I can never bring myself to sell anything A/C Orange, no matter what shape it is in. If you can part with things, then you can probably get 500 for it (my guess) or you can spend 5000.00 and then have a real nice tractor. That may sound blunt, but it puts things in perspective.

A Gleaner combine 230 or 262 gas would bolt right in. You'd need a governor from a D19. Unfortunately inexpensive and 262 diesel just don't go together. Doing the 6cyl gas conversion would give you a power house.

You are absolutely correct, as a non running diesel complete tractor it isn't worth much, but to us guys restoring one, and not wanting to drop 5 grand in ours, good used oem parts are hard to find, and worth a decent price, hence the 5K bill. So if you want to make a few bucks part it out, that's what I always "want" to do to the extra ones I buy, but haven't yet brought myself to do it yet. I've been thinking about doing it to the green ones, I have no problem making money off them green guys, and don't like the tractors anyway. :-)
