Don't use second gear until you can determine the actual cause. Probably end up splitting and replacing parts, but if some part is usable now it may be junk if you keep using it and letting it pop out.

Charlie, I don't own the tractor. It is for sale near here. Just trying to determine if it is a major problem to fix it. I have never had to work on a transmission. Just don't know what is involved with the repair.

I have heard of people adjusting the shift forks and getting by, but if it has been used this way, I would guess a tear down would be appropriate.
About 1980 I did 3rd gear in my 45. The parts were almost $500 and you have to remove the rear wheels and finals to pull the pinion shaft out of the tranny. I would think in today's world, it might cost quite a bit to hire it done? Maybe you get more input here from others. |

Not knowing the extent of the problem I would say $1000 for every gear it jumps out of.It could be forks or shift collors or mating parts on the gears or bearings or all of the above.

It could be as simple as a broke detent spring in shifter . Got a J D lawn mower and it went in two gears at once stripped teeth on cluster gear, busted hub on drive pulley . cost about 200 dollars and it was a broke detent spring that had caused it all.

The problem isn't normally confined to just one gear or set of gears. You MAY be able to adjust the detent and gear selector yoke and help things out but your most likely going to do a full on rebuild or nothing. Don't buy it unless your prepared to deal with this if making the tractor a working tractor is in it's future. You can just about bet 1500.00 in the tranny to do a 14/15 right. Half way on these trannies is just wasting money and labor as you'll soon be doing it again.

My D14 third gear is so bad that it will not move when I try to use it. I can get away with that condition since I mostly plow with that tractor 2nd works great, both high and low.

Thats what I do. I just don't use 3rd gear on my d14. It will go into gear but when you let out the clutch it pops out.
