I just use that white Styrofoam plastic-like material used in wrapping something for shipping. It is soft and cushion-like. I put that between the hood and gas tank and it prevents wear and gives it some paint protection.

This is the stuff I use. It works great. You probably can buy it at any hardware or box store like Walmart, Target, etc.

I walked around walmart and finally stopped in the camping section and found something with a long nylon strap. something like a shoulder strap.

I'm looking for something bigger now. My D17 had about an 8"x8" share that glues tot he side of the hood to keep it from getting too hot form the muffler.

The only problem with foam is it will trap condensation and cause rust. The cloth webbing will allow it to dry out.

I had some left over no slip drawer stuff. Not sure what it is called, kind of rubbery mesh pad that you can put in drawers or on the floor to keep rugs from slipping. I just cut a long strip and used that. It has worn well.
