    Posted: 20 Dec 2017 at 4:01pm
I have been told the starter ring gear is different on the Buda 262 gas and Diesel engines.
The Agco parts book confirms that information.
However I have a few questions concerning that.
#1 What is the reason for the differences ?
#2 can a diesel ring gear and starter be used on a gas motor?
#2 The agco parts book lists Flywheel "assemblies" one for gas and one for diesel. But there is no flywheel listed.  I assume flywheel is the same for both ?

Clarification would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

don't know for sure but... maybe it's theh number of teeth ? more teeth for diesel, so slower to spin, cause  the compressions higher ??
I KNOW D-14 gas engines have 2 sets, one for 6V ,another for 12V..

The reason for the differences is the diesel engine has to be cranked at a faster speed so it will start. You could use a diesel starter with its diesel ring gear flywheel on a gas engine BUT, the starter is physically LARGER and will probably interfere with the carburetor air plumbing. Also when you price a diesel starter, the gas starter is less expensive. Flywheel is the same for both gas and diesel. Buda never made a 262 engine. Allis-Chalmers made the G-262 and the D-262.

Thanks DR.
The reason for my question is I have acquired a 262 gas engine that has no flywheel. And I have several 262 diesel parts tractors.
Silly me I just recently sold a short nose starter that came on an early D17 diesel. Grrrr, that would have probably worked perfect.
Thanks Again

refresh my memory - what was the difference in the WD Vs D17 block besides oil filter and block/sleeve oring - The part# for the G230 and Wd crank were the same. Water pump on the block vs head on what models..
When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..

Hey Mac
Just to clarify what you are saying.
I can run a gas starter ring and a diesel starter ?
Will the teeth mesh correctly ?

Thanks

No, if you have a diesel flywheel, take starter ring off and put a gas starter ring on the diesel flywheel.        MACK
