ok, I'm new on here. I traded for a allis chalmers, the guy I got it from said it's a wd45. I'm not sure if it is or not...he said he changed the shifter in it to a straight one, instead of a curved one it had. Now its hung in reverse and the shifter moves freely. I've never dug into a tractor before i need all the help and info I can get. I know the tractor was hard to put into gear at a stop, if that helps in any way. I understand you can't shift while moving because it's not syncronized.

Sounds like your shifter has fell out of the slot. I've seen it happen before when the end gets worn. The common fix is to pull the shifter, take a screwdriver and line the forks up, weld up the worn spot on the shifter, and grind it back down where it moves freely in the forks.

The first thing I would do is ,pull the rubber up on the shift lever, take the snap ring out, pull the shift lever out with care not to lose the 2 little pins on each side of the lever.Take a flashlight look in & see if all 3 forks are lined up.If it is in reverse, the left fork will be up,if it is take a long screwdriver & pop it back in line with the other 2 forks.

The gear shift lever from a WD will not work in the WD45 shift tower. Only way to tell if you have a wd or a wd45 is the serial number, located on the left axel houseing just below the brake shoe cover.

might be away for the original guy to "say" he has a 45, when it's actually just a WD.
Oh, it's a 45 alright, I just changed the shifter, installed a shorter head, oh, and accidentally ran my grinder accross the serial number.....
but it's a WD45, really! |

If it has a 6 bolt pannel on the distributor/mag side of the motor, it's a WD

Unless it has a 201 cu in Leroi engine in it, which doesn't have that plate.

I'm just giving him a dead give away, as the 45 Never had that panel. Just like a curved shifter doesn't mean a WD45, but if its a straight shifter, it's a WD. or atleast a WD rear end.

wd shifter and a wd45 shifter will not interchange different length to shift forks you need to do your home work wd45 has a solid casting on the right side of engine providing engine has never been changed the shifter changed from straight to curved at s/n 127000 or call 1-574-342-4545 for explantion my 2 cents

If you bought it for $300, you got a great deal, no matter what shape it is in, and it sounds like it runs, you are way ahead. Most of the time I will give around 300-400 for a non running stuck WD or WD45. If they run, and aren't all beat to heck, with most everything there, they sell in the $1000.00 to $1500.00 range all day, the really nice straight original, on new rubber ones bring more sometimes, but not always. So bottom line, I think you did really well, and once you get it out of reverse, you can run it for years, if you are very deliberate in your shifting pattern.
