Allis folks,
The little CA project is fighting me every step of the way today. I did get several parts sandblasted. my compressor overheated and kicked off till it cooled down.
Also prototyping an area in the shop to finally set up some work benches, tool boxes, and storage areas. This should help get some projects moving along quicker, maybe?:) So I need to build support structures for the 24 feet of new old work benchs. Also brought my old craftsman tool box from the house garage to compliment the larger craftsman box given to me by my grandson Mike. So my cost so far is about zero. I will have to buy some lumber for the legs.

Yesterday I had the sandblaster where the toolboxes were. I had to relocate the dust collector on the sandblaster to the back allow it to go back to the other side of the garage door. Just another minor job to keep moving forward. No I didn't clean the top of the tool boxes off as I moved them! It's my trademark.

My view from the new bench, work area. I plan to wrap around the corner with another 12 feet of bench along the south wall also. Planning for just some shelving under the work surfaces too. Then I should be able to move my 4 x 7 foot work table into this corner as an island. Will this help me move along on the CA? Well its is a good diversion and much needed in the shop. Like any horizontal surface my areas get filled quickly with stuff! All kinds of stuff!

Oh yeah after ice cream with Cheryl we took a ride and looked at another CA. Yes the "Williow" CA tractor, is still sitting in the yard several miles away. Tires bad. water in the pan. Unsure if the engine is free? My guess is it's froze tight. Maybe even broken block? Anyway they are still out there. Do I need another? Not really! But the 4 great grand kids might have some fun at tractor pulls if it could be resurrected. Humm?
Happy labor day!
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Allis team,
Took the Allis CA crank to the machine shop for evaluation of the thrust. Both the old and new thrust bearing measured about the same. Thrust was about .010 over spec.  So have decided to have him remove the crank gear, clean up the thrust surface on the crank and remove a little from the crank snout. Then re set the gear on the shaft bringing this dimension back to spec.

A few parts:

I did get the new battery charger on the E tank and half of the CA fuel tank has been in since yesterday. This charger has a timer for about 2 hours. Seems to be working OK.
small moves.

Tractor pull last night with the WZ. 3500 lb class had more than enough power and spun out well before the 300 foot mark. Well the clutches and governor spring worked fine. Now to find the best weight class. I think the additional weight on the rear (1000 lbs) bring it back to the 4500 lb class. It may be balanced much better??

Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Steve,
it has 'Z' code gleaner engine in it.
A little more power to the wheels, which is not always a good thing.

Allis guys,
I did get the new oil ring for the pistons. If I can get the crank back soon I could get the bottom end of the CA together.
Need the head at some point too.
We spent most of the week at the Albion fair about 2 miles from home. I took 3 tractors, and a neighbors. All WD series tractors. We pulled Friday on the cement. Neighbor won the 3500 lb class. Grandson Mike pulled the WZ in the 3500 but the right rear spun out way early. I pulled the 45 in 5000 lb and was smoking the clutch when it moved the boat and I spun most of the way to a full pull. More weight and I only pulled 1 inch and then 4 inches. class was won at 8 inches.
We pulled on the dirt track Friday night with lots of good competitors. Non of us placed in this "farm Stock pull. Lots of pretty warm tractors!
Saturday was antique pulling. I placed 4th in 4000 with the WZ. Friend Matt pulled my 45 and was second out of 19 tractors. Not too bad.
Hope things are good. I would like to have the CA ready for next spring pulls. Lots to do!
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

OKAY, part of the hard steering is because your swapped in front end is from a very early “short arm” C that was used from about 1940-1942. These used a corresponding short arm on the primary steering box as well, so that they went through the same arc. Later model Cs used the same length long arm front & rear as the CA. We love pulling our Cs. Two weeks ago Dad won the 2500 lb class on his single front wheel C and took second at 3000 lbs. Dad was sitting in first by a little over a foot & I had the last hook in the class on my wide front C, and I beat him by about five feet!🤠 So we finished 1-2. We also both won first place trophies on our WCs at 3500 & 4000 lbs. We celebrated Dad’s 90th birthday 3 days later!!

Kip, folks,
Thanks for checking in. Yes I am looking forward to pulling this CA made from many parts. I think the steering will be much better when I get it back together.  Yes I am going to try it with a short and long arm combo.
Congratulations on the wins! Awesome!

Folks,
Just a quick up date on the CA. The crank has been modified to improve the thrust dimension. Will pick that up in the morning. I have another project in the works ahead of it so we will have to wait to get back on the CA.

So did you modify the crank such that you made a "Stroker CA?" The torque will be good for pulling!!!

If so that is awesome.

Dan,
No. just reset the thrust dimension on the old crank. I now need to get a speedi-sleeve for the front seal surface. Another small project. Getting a stroked crank is probably not going to happen around here.
Hope you're having fun with your CA!

AC folks,
The crank is back home. Head is still in process. Any way the shop said the thrust clearance was now about  .007 inch, which is better. Now I need to get a speedy sleeve for the crank snout.
We have been working on the 65 Comet for several weeks. Just got it done today. Maybe will get back on this CA soon.

I have a short arm gearbox arm if you need it. I purchased the wron part from EBay and can’t return. With a short arm on the gearbox and long on the steering sector it steeers real easy just can only turn about 20 degrees.

Dave,
I have a short arm on the front and long arm on the gear box. So that should work as you mentioned.  Thank you for the offer.
I have a lot of work left to make the CA parts of the pulling team.

Allis folks,
I did set the crank and old mains back in the block. Also cleaned and installed the lifters.
Need to order the speeding-sleeve on the crank k snout for the new seal to ride.
just part of the many moves to make when you tear one down this far.
Hope things are good in orange land!

Agree getting a CA Stroker would be something!

I have had fun with our CA. Will have it out in a few weeks to do a bit more work.

Has been fun to see your progress on your CA. Keep up the great work.

Guys,
Well some days are better than others. I put the lifters in the block and installed the cam shaft. Aligning the timing marks on the gears. Then rotated the block and started the piston assembly. Piston 4 and 3 went really well. Got to the number two piston and broke the oil ring. So I need to order a new one. This will be the third oil ring. Maybe I should order two. The first one was only 1/2 of the oil ring. No idea how that one broke. Sandy lake replaced that one. I will foot the bill for the third one. As I had it in the ring expander it just seemed to open it just a touch too much, and snap!
So three positions are in place in the block. Getting there slowly!

Allis folks,
Hand a nice visit from a forum member Joe G today. We talked Allis and reviewed his gas tank for his WD45. Also looked at some of my CA items still in process.
Got a call from the machine shop and the CA head is done. Will pick that up in next day or so. Have most of the parts to get the engine together in a week or so.
Have just a ton of cleaning to do! Almost forgot body work on every thing, primer (a lot) and then paint! Then some assembly required! Yikes!

I have always thought this was the proper way to install rings on a piston.

Thanks! i always learn  something on these forums.  I may try that ring installation method next time on the last piston ring. Looks better than a ring expander.

I've got a 125 hanging on a stand waiting to be taken apart and rebuilt. Been there since 2020! Got it broke loose, partially. Then drug the 756 home and got interested in it. Then the deraciao hit... Looking more and more like a project for my retirement!

The oil ring breakage is frustrating, but I guarantee you will still have this engine done before I have the one for my WD done... You are years ahead of me! Can't wait to see your CA buttoned back up.

As always Chris, I enjoyed our visit. I have no doubt once you move past the stubborn oil ring and assemble that engine things will start to move right along. I can certainly show up to help with some major assembly if you need another set of hands too. Just let me know.

I primered the WD45 fuel tank today!

Joe, Folks,
We have been helping at the grandsons new building. But the CA is still on my mind. The refurbished CA head is back in my shop. New valves, springs, guides, keepers,  and freeze plugs. Exhaust port face freshened and flat. Bottom of head resurfaced. Some clean up and should be ready to install.
I did add a new 1.500 dia. speedi-sleeve on the front of the crank for the new seal to ride on.
I am not sure the ring installation in the you-tube above will work for this lower thick oil ring? More on that when the new ring gets here.
I need a good used oil bath cup. My is really beat up! Anyone??
Joe I made need your help! You gave me a good kick to get this CA in line to start clean up. Your 45 project is looking really good!
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

just a update:

Have the rest of the big parts uncovered. I see some oil at the rear seal areas. Probably need to tear into that also?

Allis folks,
Well I played hookie and played in the big sandbopx yesterday at our local tractor pulls. Cheryl was with her sister so I was able to pull in 3500, 3750 and 4000 lb class with the WZ. After several pulls this year the WZ is not preforming as well as I expected. First class I went off to the right on some unused track area and end up 9 place out of 12 pullers.
3750 I lowered the speed stayed in the used part of the track and came in 6 out of 11.
4000 Stayed at medium speed in the used portion of the track and finished 4th out of 11.
My friend Jim on the Cockshutt 20 in the 3000 lb class. He has a 40 in the 6000 lb class also,

I think my balance is heavy on the front of the WZ. Seems to do better as OI load up the rear. So I may need to rethink the classes for this unit.

Ok back to the CA:
I am new to these. Is the throw out bearing pressed on to the sliding part? It looks like it

Friend John helped clean on the CA.

I pulled more parts off the skeleton of the CA:

Clutch pedal is very worn this tractor was used hard:

This is the cross bar that I plan to pull from. That's where the d-ring was attached before.
It's in the vice because the bar (black) on the right was bent like a pretzel. I did some crude blacksmithing to make it much straighter. Maybe not perfect. But it is a puller so it's going to have some blems.

Thinking of eliminating this swinging hitch and just come off the rear end down to the cross bar and mount the new d-ring right on the cross bar.

Will be nice to clean up this area through the torque tube. Just a bunch of monkeying around to get these apart. Some heat required to get the brake pedal off the cross shaft:

So the E-tank is running and cleaning up several items: I would like to have some paint on this even if it is parts in primer by Christmas this year.

Hope things are good in Orange land
Thanks for checking on us.
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Allis folks,
Still picking and cleaning on the old CA parts:

Ordered new axle seals for the rear end. Probably the time to get in there and tidy those up as I do see some leaks on one side.

I helped John Kelley work on his 42 Ford rear shocks today, Then retrieved some parts from the E-tank bath. Those are ready to go into the sandblast cabinet.
I want to open up the Ross steering box and do an exam on that too.
Should have the new oil ring for piston #1 to be installed soon.
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl
