Thanks for the pictures and support on this CA project! Yea a old puller doesn't need to look grand. But I am going to try to improve my body work and paint skills. Why at 73 years old??? I have no idea why! I like the idea to make improvements, we will see how this turns out. Snowing here again today. So we are riding the couch watching you-tube where guys are doing body work. I need to go to where I have all my rims and centers stored. At one time I had and odd flat bolt center wheel just like the one you have. All my others were the dimple bolt circle ones.

Chris, you are doing way better than me - I can't get much done when it's below 30 degrees here. My shop isn't great to try to heat. I am so jealous of your buildings.
I too would use that pitted wheel center.

Yes I like the shop, but its expensive to heat. But we really like the heat coming up through your shoes. Our dog Ruby wants to stay in the shop and lay on the 69 degree floor in the kitchen area where we hang out a lot. If I have any recommendations on a building with several big overhead doors like ours. It would be to get even better insulation in them. I think ours are R16, but the wind seemed to be whistling through them up here on the hill. I hope that i do help get you going on your CA. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

Guys,
Not a lot going on here, which is pretty much the norm anymore. Temps are around zero. That D14 with the blade really works well to get some of the snow moved around in the drive area. Tractor shop on the left, Sugar house on the right. Going through fuel (propane) like crazy. But the shop is comfortable. I did get the valve cover surface cleaned up. Will mask the valves and the bottom end. Need to get some primer and orange on this block: Ordered headlights and bullet tail light today from Alex here on the forum. Found some old steel sheet stock to repair the fender. It's about .060 thick. Have the tool box steering cover in the E-tank to clean the inside of some of the rust. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

Beautiful shop Chris, what size is it? I’m still shopping around, metal building or stick built. Metal buildings certainly are less expensive and go up in 3 days. I’m looking at a 30’x70’ with a 30’ lean two off of it. 3- 10x10 garage doors, 12 ft ceiling. Enough to get the biggest tractor, my XT, inside. Will see how much more a 14’ ceiling cost, 1-12x12 door so I don’t have to cut off any of the straight pipe. Right now all my stuff is at the farm in a open face building which is fine but I would like to get it out of the afternoon sunlight.
CA is looking good, snow is sticking around here as well. 4 degrees this morning and a high of 24 most of the week. Other than feeding cows twice a day I’m staying inside. |

The shop is 40 deep x 64 long. As mentioned when I started a thread on the shop build on this forum (Shop Talk thread) They are never big enough. Sounds like you have a good design that will fit your needs. I would recommend 12 foot wide doors. I really like that width. My grandson is having a post type building put up with steel roof and siding. It's taken since the middle of Sept and not close to being done. He has a contractor friend working on it when they can. It is 40 x 60 with a 14 x 60 lean to, on the south side. How many cows do you have? What is the breed? My dad had dairy grade Holestiens most of his life. I helped on the farm and lived on his other farm about 5 miles away where he had young stock. Cold weather tests everything! You had to keep moving to stay warm. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

We just have a small farm now so the herd has been cut back to 14 Hereford and a few Angus beef cattle. Our bull is a pure breed pole Hereford. Cattle prices have been doing well for the past 2 years. Making quality orchard grass hay is what we enjoy most.

We will talk at some point on a wiring harness for this project. Propane Yea the shop is sucking the fuel right now. The temp was -10F last night. I called for propane a about 2 weeks ago. Called them yesterday and they are running behind. They put me on a special list for quicker fill up. Yea right:) Might have to get a bigger tank? Some days I miss having a wood fire in the house. But I don't miss the work. I did get the CA engine block masked off for primer and top coat. Trying to do just a little in between folks visiting and us resting during the cold temps. Still prototyping this spray booth. A fan with some filters on both sides. May help?? If I ever spray something??:) Some sheet metal to repair the rusted fender. Found this scrap in the corner. Rough, but should work. Sanded the spokes of the steering wheel The Ross steering box. opened drained of sludge and old black lube. Will clean it up, new gaskets, and fresh lube. The paint bay I paint in is my best friends farm bay. Completely sealed, insulated. 2-20”x20” filters/vents to suck in fresh outdoor air. Dual 20”x20” fans pulling air outside. Explosion proof of course, does well moving air. Full nose/mouth breathing mask, dual filters, I don’t smell any fumes. I tried the full suit, full mask, fresh air fed from outside. I couldn’t deal with it, hose kept getting in the way, mask fogged up. I couldn’t see to paint. The important thing is to get the fumes away so you don’t inhale them. Stay safe, it’s fun to paint until it effects your health.

Sounds like a great paint booth to work in. Mask for sure, If I ever get started? Today John and I worked on an old rusted CA fender. This had rust in the area where it bolts for the tractor. An old hunk of scrap to fill the void: A little shaping to help the patch match up at the seam. The old Mig is all I have to stick this together: Spot, cool, repeat: A grinder here and there: A few taps with hammer and dolly. This is where we can primer and smooth with a few coats of filler. . +1 wear a Good mask, especially if two part epoxy type paint or clear coat. That stuff hardens in your lungs forever. And explosion proof fans. .

Yes shiny may happen on this old CA. I am a little concerned about the engine build/ assembly I want to learn more and possibly take the head back off and degree the cam. Yes this is a step back for sure but If I am going to learn and get the most out of this cam I better do it now. Will let you know how that works out. Back to the body work: I have added a stiffener under the hood to help reduce oil canning of the hood sheet metal. This should help with the final forming. Next, friend John helped clean up the steering support sheet metal: We cut 3 inches off the bottom on the left side below the tool box lid area. Transfered the holes. After priming this will need a light coat of filler. A trial fit after repairing the rusted out area. I also added a wire chase for the inside of the fender with the tail light. Thanks! John and I started to clean up the Ross steering box and column. And I did install the new gasket. The gas tank will be next to clean up the outside some more prior to primer: This is the handle for the tool box. John wants this to remain shiny: I have been learning about degreeing the cam. (7000 you tube videos for small block Chevys) I typically learn by doing, so this will be a small project. Of course I should have done that with the head off. A couple steps back but I will keep you upto date on the cam checking and or adjusting process. I did order a degree wheel today. Also talked to a local machine shop and they are willing to build some tooling for me to mount the degree wheel to the crank snout. Oh yeah will need some new gaskets too. On my CA the tool box lid has a spring loaded latch on the inside of the lid.

Guys,
I have issues with my D14 left fender that was patched rather crudely. Not sure I will ever get to that tractor for a Clean Refurb and Paint. But it would not need any engine work It runs good. The lid for the tool box has some spring in the hinge too. A little tuning and it should close and lock smoothly.
Thanks for the comments! We try to get just a little done each week. John has the steering box cleaned up for primer. The Degree wheel wont be here for a week or too.:( I need to design a adapter to the fit the crank snout which will pick up on the key and mount the wheel. Also be used to spin the engine. That adapter will be an important first part of the degreeing of the cam. If that works I should be able to get an accurate TCD for piston Number 1, and set the degree wheel to start the process. Chris, awesome cam details. All the opening and closing degrees, with the overlap and lift takes me back 40 years when we picked a Lunati cam for my 68 Pontiac Lemans. Was a high RPM cam, with a big lift and overlap and had a really nice "loping" idle at a 1,000 RPM's! However, terrible gas mileage in combo with a heavy foot! Great work. It seems your comments on the cam specs are positive. I am definitely not in any position to even comment on the cam specs. I will be really lucky to get it degreed properly. Also no clue if it will help the old CA get down the dirt track a little farther than some other pullers? The old cam had some wear for sure. Several lobes were worn down smaller than the others. A couple of friends on the sidelines to help me with the cam degreeing process. I did some wire brushing on the rear rims today. Got these rims into primer. I used a simple card board mask that matched the rim radius as I primered them. Also picked up some rattle cans of Rust-oleum hammered silver. Might look a little more like galvanized. Trying to find some Antique White Rust-oleum rattle cans. It's out of stock most places. I will find some or order it if I need to. This is a fairly good match for the two tone look of most of my old Allis tractors. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

The silver hammer paint on the rims. Turned out fine for the old CA. Decided that I am going to use the mismatched and pitted centers for the rears. You can only look at one side of the tractor at a time anyway!:) Cold weather has us in a holding pattern for our spring maple syrup production. Regards, Chris |
