 Topic: Allis C front Steering Gear Removal Help

I have a 1944 C Narrow front, found that the slop is in the horizontal shaft bushings for the steering. I have dropped the pedistal, all wheel bearings and gears are ok. Removed the set bolt on the side of the sector gear up in the front, below the radiator. The shaft is wleded to the short steering arm, as shown in my diagrams, and gear should slide off the shaft. Problem is- I cant get the gear off to replace the bushings. Any tips on this? Not much room to get up in there thru large hole in the bottom where the pedistal mounts. Thanks in advance..

I was just looking at the AGCO parts book. It shows 3 different short shafts. 2 of them have a nut to lock the gear on. The other one must be pressed on, because there is nothing threaded and no kind of retainer on the "inside" end of that stub.

I have that diagram also- My shaft has the set screw and the nut, which I have removed both and think it sould come right off. Been tapping on shaft at the bottom - trying to get it off. Also tried prying wiith bar from inside. It's not moving... I have to clean more grease off then may try some heat on gear. Sure did not make it easy to get in there. Thanks

Well been working on this for couple weeks now, applied heat from torch few times, put a porta-power on it.. NOTHING Had an idea which I think I will try this weekend.. Take off grill and drill a 1/2" - 3/4" dia. hole thru steel frame directly across from the steering shaft and use a steel rod to try and get the shaft off the gear by hitting the steel rod. My idea of cutting the shaft wont work- shaft too long once cut still not enough room to get gear and remaining shaft out of hole.

Once you have the grill off unbolt the radiator take off the four studs holding it to the engine and you can have it on your bench to work on. I put mine in the press used a bar and hunk of metal for a teeter totter offset and press it out. I have used a large pickle fork and big hammer to remove the bear on one a long time ago. But I had to dot it on the bench there's just no way to get a stubborn one off still on the tractor. The CA I took apart for parts came out real easy. I just took the nut off wacked it once slid the gear out and pulled the shaft. I think I still have a extra housing laying on the shelf if you still can't get it apart

Finally got gear off by drilling a 3/4" hole in casing opposite the shaft and pounding out shaft. Question- what are the 3 holes in the casing that appear to be threaded and the 3 dimples in the shaft for. It is not indicated on any parts diagram. Almost like it should have a ball and spring to fall in detent to hold shaft steady- but for steering? Anyone seen this.. Thanks

I use www.fotki.com You can get it free but I pay 5 years at a time to make sure I can not loose my thousands of pictures.
