Opened up the fields with series 3 and the model 307.Then went to the A/C 172 on the 45d after some preventative maintenance on the mower, sharpening, greasing, checking gear box ,etc.Wow was I surprised how well these A/C mowers cut.A fun day listening to that old buda hum all afternoon. This is the mower from the Bill Mishler sale.A fun day with the new to me mower!!

Any reason the height adjuster is set to the rear bracket?  Mine was connected to the front, I never thought anything about that, and have just left it.

Which way are your wheels,to the front or the rear? The jack gets attached to the rear bracket with wheels in the rear position and to the front if wheels are to the front according to the operators manual, that's all I know.

My uncle has one of those AC choppers. Always did a more complete job of cutting than dads woods. I often wondered if the blade spins faster. It's been years since I used it but it sounded faster. It had the dual blade setup...one near the deck and a drop down one that cur close to ground. You got a steal of a deal on that one. Take care of it and it will out last you. They are tuff.

Steve they definitely run faster.I can tell the difference from running the two mowers, between the bush hog 307 and this A/C cutter.I'm liking it.

Oh yeah, these old AC mowers are fantastic! The 172 looks great. Even mine, with a horribly dull blade, does an amazing job of cutting, almost like a finish mower.

I've got on my to-do list to get new blades for my 160.

My wheels are set behind the mower.  So, I guess, the jack should connect to the rear bracket.  Maybe that is better for keeping it level, as I noticed the front is lower than the rear of the mower deck.  Dave

Couple advantages to having the wheels to the rear, can cut closer and the weight of the cutter is on the rear of the tractor giving better traction.

Nice mower. Why isn't the hydraulic cylinder attached to the axle arm extension? I'm having one of those as well as an anchor being made right now so I can put a hydraulic cylinder on one. What's the serial number on yours?

I don't think the cylinder would raise it much if hooked to the long lever. They only travel 8in.

Jim I pulled the pin on the cylinder to use the manual jack for the day.The hydraulics on the 45 diesel aren't working at this time so I was going old school for the day.The cylinder works great, just didn't have hydraulics for this run.I haven't been able to find the serial number.Where is it located?

I use a single action cylinder with my 172 shredder and while it doesn't lift the mower a tremendous amount, it is nice to use for road transport and uneven field surfaces where the mower bottoms out.  Plus, its cool to have and use!

Is your cylinder for low pressure or high pressure hydraulics?  Your D17 III would be low pressure while the '45 would be high, so you need the correct cylinder or you'll blow it out with the '45.

Dave, I believe the cylinder to be a high pressure cyl(screwed together).I put a new hyd hose on it while on the series 4 d17.Once I had it bled out it was a very quick response.I haven't had it on the series 3 d17 yet.My Series 3 is still high press low volume system.

Jim, after looking at the manual again I found the location of the serial number. The info was in the "how to order parts" section at the beginning of the parts section of the book.Serial # is 6-7508.Here's pic  of inside the front cover of the manual and the number on the mower.Looks like original owner was Dick Koons.I guess Bill Mishler got the original manual when he bought it back in the day. This is the second piece of allis equipment that I have acquired with the original manual in the last eleven months.Don't see that too often.

Dave,
That's  neat that you got the original manual with it. Is there any date in the manual? I have two mowers, serial numbers 6-1740 and 6-10078 but no idea on the years. I just finished mowing around 30 acres with one, when I stop for the day, there's always a wheel barrow or two of clippings to clean off. I am "restoring" one mower and had the A-C chain guards made for the front and rear, maybe that will help keep debris off the deck as well as protect me from flying objects.

I'm glad you are enjoying the mower !
The cylinder was always used with a wd45 . I'm sure it's a high pressure . It was never a problem .

So, D17 III was still high pressure hydraulics?  I had thought that changed with the series III.

No, only the series IV D17 had low pressure, high volume hydraulics.

I know that he bought it in a private purchase when he bought the wd45 lot 20 , 4 bolt wide front end anti shock steering wheel .

I think around Martinsville , Indiana . About 6-7 years ago . I really liked using them together.

The shields were made by Schmidt Machine Co. near Upper Sandusky, OH. If you're interested, give Konner Holloway a call at 866-368-3814. He has these saved in his system. The only thing I'd change is to have the chain holes enlarged a bit. The chain fits in ok when unpainted, but needs some nudging when painted. Other than that they are perfect. You drill the holes.

Any idea of a rough cost for those brackets? Kind of tempting to get a set for my 172.
