What were the differences in the units (other than the 10hp rating), specifically 1970-1973 as I recall both were made in that three year bracket . . .
Thanks in advance.

185's had a hydraulic oil cooler as standard equipment and I thought the fuel tank was 2 or 3 gallons larger.

Was the hydraulic pto engage available on the 180? My 185 has it but some don't. Didn't know if 180's could have it or not but it's a nice option.

Option on 180's and now that I think about it, the hyd pto might have been standard on the 185.

And this one. Seems to be some differn3ece opinions on if the gear ratios are the same. Sounds like there was a ratio change sometime during production.

Only low gear ratio in the transmission was ever changed. Nothing else.

Our 185 has the two speed PTO - 540/1000 which makes it very handy if you are running a light load like a GT dryer then run on the 1000 shaft.
Dad's 180 had the hyd PTO clutch. Most 185's were on 30 rims.

Appreciate the feedback. Ran across a fella that has a late 185 and a very early 180 for sale. As luck would have it, just stumbled on a late 180 with 3K hours and very close to the house.
Leaning towards the late 180 with low hours.

Tim, the 185 is a super sweet tractor. Enough size to do a lot, nimble enough to get in tight spaces.Plus it sounds great too. Tracy

Hey Tracy, getting tired of feeding the gas D-Series and stayed with em this long because of no heavy tillage work. Can always re-do the nicer ones for toys and have a D15 carcass that I am thinking of swapping a Kubota diesel into, if for nothing else but a brush cutting tractor as I have taken on more lease pastures and put on more cattle. At the end of the day I would like something good on fuel that can get into tight spaces as you say (and still trailer easy) due to plenty of trees. The 190XTIII that followed me home some years ago is really too big for what I need so been itching for a 180/185 the last few years. Don't see many around these parts so when these three turned up all within two hours from the house, well, you know how we seem to justify another A-C.
Especially that model we have been wanting for a while!

Tim quick go get them. I had a chance to use a neighbors 180 this summer after my d17 motor went south. It was really nice baling hay with that. I am right there with you on not wanting to feed the d serries gas motors they have a drinking problem compared to diesels.   I have given the topic of repowering a d15 and d17 alot of thought. The old farmall M had a repower to a Detroit 2 71.   I think that would be ok for a d15 with a 3 71 for a d17. But the Detroit 71 serries is a screamer and doggy unless it is wide open.
So that made me look some more. What you want is to keep the rpm about the same as the original gas motor to keep the pto speed the same. That lead me to the deutz 912 serries motors. Power wise I think the 3 cylinder would fix a d15 and the 4 cylinder for a d17. I haven't checked the physical fit. But being air cooled you gain a little room with the lack of a radiator.   In the end i decided to rebuild my d17 226 just couldn't bring myself to swap the motor in a tractor my grandfather bought.   Or atleast not that one probably will in my farmall h.   The modern diesel engines run alot higher rpm and you need to be sure you don't end up running your implements at too high a pto speed. So for what it is worth those are my thoughts to date on the topic. I wish someone offered a kit to covert the d17 it would be great I actually like the older manual clutch better then the hydraulic one on the 180. Probably because I grew up with that d17.

Tim, you won't regret it. If a 170-175 comes up, snatch it up too. Eldon might have all the others left in the country!LOL Tracy

The hydraulic engagement wasn't standard equipment on 185s. Dads is a 1976 and doesn't have it. But all of them should have been. Would be nice to kick the pto on without clutching

If you have to clutch it, that means it's not independent right? Man, Allis was ahead on so many things, but they were behind on independent pto!
Live PTO on the WD was an advancement though.
