Is the 180 and 185 transmission the same from the motor back?

Pretty much. There were differences in the std PTO or hydraulic clutch PTO and low gear in older 180 transmissions was faster than later tractors, oldest 180's had smaller bolts on the rear wheel centers, but other than that, they are the same.

So the 200 RPM increase on the 185 accounts for the ground speed increase? Or was it more due to tire size (18.4x28)? I've heard more than 1 person say the 180 was perfect with regards to the speed spread, and the 185 was just to fast

180 and 185 gear ratios are identical in all gear selections, except for 1st gear on certain models. Seldom have I seen a 180 with anything other than 18.4 x 28's and the majority of 185's were the same way. Where I come from, 18.4 x 30's on a 185 is kind of special. Yes, 200 RPM makes a diff in all ground speeds, but whenever I worked on a 180, it got the extra RPM's automatically.

it is amazing to me to see pictures of all the 38" tires on the web - this is what I thought would be a needle in the haystack.

The transmission/differential housing is from the hydraulic dipstick on back. The torque housing is from the clutch bell housing back to the hydraulic dipstick, and yes, it is the same for either PTO style.

Interesting how tractors were equipped or not depending on region , I guess. In Saskatchewan, Ive never seen a 180 or 185 with anything other than 18.4-30 tires. And Ive never seen one with three point hitch...Trev.
