    Posted: 05 Oct 2026 at 4:24am
I decided to put a block heater in my 7030 in case it is needed this winter. It has had a combine engine put in it so it doesn't have one now. I don't know a lot of history on the tractor so I plan to change out the coolant at the same time. The question I thought of is what are the chances of the plug coming out clean after 50 years? And then is there a good way to repair the threads in the aluminum casting? Thanks in advance.

If it was mine, I'd have the engine fully warmed up to operating temp and carefully use a 1/2" impact wrench to get it to move and know it is loose. Have your hand on the socket to control what's happening to keep it from completely coming unthreaded !!!

If that elbow is aluminum and you put any appreciable heat there the aluminum is so soft it will take the threads out with very little force. Id do what Doc said and with a impact wrench bump on it maybe back and forth until it moves after it does spray it with penetrant. Patience is your friend. You probably wont have any. Good luck

Thank you for the advice, I had planned to work on it this weekend but the heater won't get here until next week. Everything I work on at work that is aluminum recommends letting it cool to room temperature before trying to remove anything. I hope it comes out clean and without too much of a fight.

My local blacksmith will heat it and cool it several times before even trying to remove it.
He’d remove it at room temperature.

On manifolds I will spray penetrating oil on it several months before it needs to be removed or when we get some new to us.
That way it gets lots of heat and cooling.
