I removed the starter and took it to a starter/generator shop that still exists in Denver, CO. He said that in the 50's and 60's in Denver there were 43 shops that specialized in them. Today, there are two!
As proposed, the brushes were seriously worn and he said he was afraid to see the armature as he expected it to be damaged. Luckily, no damage.
The real problem though was the main electrical post on the starter. Inside, there is a plastic holder for the wires that go to the rest of the starter. That plastic piece was melted and therefore was poor electrical contact with weak starting. Probably too many 12 volts going to it over the years.
Got it back and now it starts strongly and not even tempted to give it a shot of starter fluid as I had to before. Starts right up.
