I have a A-C Model D grader with a WD engine. The starter will occasionally make just a single click sound when I push it. Not a click, click, click when a low battery. When I tap the starter with a hammer it works fine. Steiner has parts for it: Model #: 1107962. They have: Starter Drive (Bendix), Starter Drive Assembly that includes the Armature, Starter Drive Spring only, and the Starter Brush and Bushing kit. Anyone know which it most likely needs, or should I go with the Starter Drive Assembly Kit and Brush & Bushing Kit to get everything covered, or what if anything the problem may be caused by? |

My eperience is you have a brush sticking if yiu can tap it and it wirks after that ------------- 1984 80780 1957 D14 DES 300 with 25000 engine 616 tractor |

you might just take the starter apart... clean the brushes and commutator... and clean the crud off the bendex and lube so it slides good.. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

| Cleanup would be good but I've heard here that there could be grounding issues where the nose fits and bolt locks it. |

I removed the starter and took it to a starter/generator shop that still exists in Denver, CO. He said that in the 50's and 60's in Denver there were 43 shops that specialized in them. Today, there are two! As proposed, the brushes were seriously worn and he said he was afraid to see the armature as he expected it to be damaged. Luckily, no damage. The real problem though was the main electrical post on the starter. Inside, there is a plastic holder for the wires that go to the rest of the starter. That plastic piece was melted and therefore was poor electrical contact with weak starting. Probably too many 12 volts going to it over the years. Got it back and now it starts strongly and not even tempted to give it a shot of starter fluid as I had to before. Starts right up.
