OK, as some may know my A-C Buda diesel FL50 needs to be rebuilt but a Cockshutt 30 has a gas engine that'll 'drop right in', so here's the 'donor'.

Dan73: I was quoted $5000 to redo the Buda diesel,so I'm onto plan 'B'....but if you want to rebuild the engine.........
I know I'm sitting on a fence over this, seeing how the Cockshutt was made 20 miles from here and is 100% operational BUT I need a good reliable forklift and in 3 years have not found another engine or a reasonable replacement.sigh... PS. wife's away for a few more days...then the fan will get 'sticky'..... Jay |

I never saw a Cockshutt when I was on the farm, but I think they're classics in and of themselves. I'd look elsewhere for a motor. There has to be several floating around.

Jay I still haven't finished rebuilding my d15 I started 3 years ago. Seems like life keeps getting in the way. I actually got the new hydraulic system plumbed up the other day. Only to find that the guy who rebuild my loader and added a quick hitch to it messed up and the hitch bottomed out on the loader arms and snapped off the end of the loader arms. Needless to say I am more then a little upset about that. If I get my loader arms fixed and get the power steering control valve fixed fix the one flat tire I think it will be done or atleast in the field brush hogging. There are other issues but that is all that I think is stopping me.
So long story short I would love the diesel but I don't have that kind of time or money to put into it. I don't know what I would do in your place. I just know I would do alot of head scratching if the other tractor was good. But we do what we have to do. And if you get a tractor you need up and running it is worth it in the end. |

Cockshutt 30 engine is Buda gas and is supposed to 'drop in place' of the tired old Buda diesel in my A-C forklift.Already have 4 D-14s so I really don't need another tractor.Did I just type that ??!! The FL is far more useful but a B to start now that weather is cool(when the white stuff comes, it don't start at all).
Converting to gas solves the problem and I KNOW it'll be a chore. 4000# counter weight will be 'fun' to remove(step 4 of 50...) I haven't found a RUNNING engine locally, and it HAS to be running NOT in 4 boxes in PEI. Heck I'd trade the 30 and the diesel for a good GAS engine installed,sigh...in the meantime I've got 3 more 'D-14 sheds' to build with a rotator cuff injury..double sigh. Jay guy between rock and a hard place,on the teeter totter,on the picket fence,.... |

Shameless.. you haven't SEEN how little room there is inside the A-C forklift ! I did _think_ about putting 2 15HP 'offshore' OHV engines in though, one to run the drive, the other the hydraulics. Seems OK ..only $1000 for all parts, bit of machining to get all to fit,but....
Putting the 30 engine in might be the 'cleanest' way to go.... unless someone else 'fixes' the diesel or drops in a good engine, then they'd get the 30 for free.... Jay |

leave the Cockshut alone, get rid of a couple of the D-14. take that money and fix the diesel. lots more D-14 around than the Cockshuts . Several years ago an orignal 30 in Kansas on auction bought $4250.

Scrap the lift find another. I fix forklifts for a living and its not worth holding onto an ac. There is nearly zero parts availability. These are not grampa's tractor that people held on to, they were tools and carry no heritage to the companies that make them. $5k should buy you a early 90's 5000lb pneumatic lift truck.

I hear you guys, that's why I'm sitting on the fence over it ! Reasonable forklifts are rare up here, esp. less than 5K.Can't fix diesel as it's 5K as well.Never considered selling 2 D-14s though I suppose I might get $2500 for 2 of them, that's only 1/2 way to the magic 5K(before taxes of 15% though). I KNOW it'll be a nightmare to swap out the engines but having the good gasser here should buy me time to find another forklift.
In the meantime I gotta build me another shed to hide the Cockshutt before wife gets back on Monday,if not, well there might be a real impressive 'Farm Auction' for the late Canuck Jay ! |

Borrowing the engine out of the Cockshutt wouldn't be a heartbreaker...
There was a fellow on the forum here (in Indiana?) that had a Buda 230 gasser for sale... came out of a combine I think... it should be the right one. Cockshutt/Co-op's biggest bonus- full LIVE PTO... that was their big bonus feature. An interesting company history. |

230 is too big, gotta be the 153 to fit inside the forklift.
course after driving it for an hour at my farm( all one acre,1/2 cluttered with tractors....) I kinda don't want to carve up the Cockshutt which was made about 25 miles from me...sigh, must be getting old hate to destroy a neat piece of history... She's going to stay altogether for now. Jay |

Well keeping it together sounds wise to me. It just looks like it is in really good shape. Good luck working out the forklift issue. There are alot of good used forklifts on Craigslist in this area I think if you keep an eye open something will pop up.

That's way to purdy a tractor to borrow an engine from. I don' suppose an AC "B" engine would fit in there? They are plentiful and reasonable to buy or what about an IHC Cub or A engine?

hmm re: 'fix the diesel'.. I ain't got $5000 to fix it,can't find another good running forklift for even 3x what the Cockshutt cost me. Problem with putting another diesel in is the 'hard starting in cold weather' problem and it's the only diesel on the property.
Trying to figure if I can 'bodge' a quick attach type unit onto the loader.... sigh....and it's down to freezing tonight ! Jay |
