Tim, cherish those times and God bless you for being one of the caring ones. I just lost my Mom last November and it still hurts. She didn't know much the last 4 or 5 months, but we cherished the time together. The next day she'd ask why I hadn't been there for a month....sad. I lost my Dad back in 1983. He was only 53 at the time and I was only 34. there have been a lot of days when I think about him and would give the world to be able to sit down and chat.

unit 5 is a KEEPER! it's great that you can spend time with your Dad. I hope it will last a long time! it really saddens me that so many families won't take the time to visit their folks after them going into a home, but they will be right there at will reading time!

Cherish those moments Tim . What I would give to sit down with my dad and have a conversation. Lost him in 97 and think about him every day . And thanks to your better half for helping out.

Spend 3 years taking my dad out to lunch in town then go spend an hour to 3 hours with he and mom. She had a stork and was more or less bedridden and in a care facility. He was having memory trouble and needed watching. It sure cut into farming time. Thankfully had help from my kids just graduated high school and going to the local Junior College. But now 15 years later, really thankful I have spent the time.

10 years later I still treasure those clear moments with Dad, most only lasted 10 minutes but his memory was clear as can be. then he would say " I'm ready to go home where's my car" or " You're not the Boss of me" I'd tell him he lives here with me now till we get that big hole in his roof fixed and most times he would calm down enough I could get him in bed. Spend as much time as you can with your Dad, you will never regret it. My Dad's favorite was garden ripened red tomatoes with lots of salt, when he quit eating them I knew it was soon time for him. Yes, enjoy when you can... these 'memories' keep you going long after ... ... ... ... life is made up of moments we enjoy and sometimes not, but we can appreciate the good and know that the unenjoyable is temporary. don't know where I am going with this except to say life goes on.

Your story of eating with your Dad brings memories to me of visiting with my Dad when he was in a Nursing Home. My Dad suffered from Parkinsons,but didn't have much dementia. It's emotional for a family when a loved one has dementia. My wife's mother suffered from dementia. She was always happy,seldom mean or angry. She just got where she didn't recognize anyone. We still came to visit.I hope your family can have many more cherished memories with your Dad!

Tonight I was planning on taking supper down to my dad. He is in the rest home with dementia. I told him the other night I would try to bring supper in for him. As it turned out, I had to take a phone call from a friend who was going through some tough times. I didn’t get to do the cooking, but my wife did. She made for us 12 strips of bacon. She sliced up a huge red tomato razor thin. Then we had English toasted muffin bread. We wrapped it all up in tinfoil and I took it to town. Dad sat down and saw that tomato and that bread, but when I unwrap that bacon, that man’s eyes went closed, his head went back, and when his eyes opened up, he had a smile on his face. We sat there and had toasted bacon and tomato sandwiches. We had a good talk and reminisced about Tractors that he had and the tractors that he never got a chance to buy, yet. Mom was down there today and said he just could make sense of anything. But tonight, we had a good visit and a good meal. We were done, and there was two pieces of bacon left. I asked if he wanted any more. No, he said. Then I said, how about you eat one and I’ll eat the other. OK he said, and we finished it down. Sometimes you got to live for those moments. Thank you to my wife for making it happen.
